Rough weather alert: safety measures in place in Kozhikode to mitigate natural calamities

File photo for representational purposes. | Photo Credit: SAKEER HUSSAIN The district administration has imposed a complete ban on non-essential travel to hilly and high-altitude areas of the district from 7 p.m. on Thursday (September 24, 2026) to 7 a.m. on Friday (September 25, 2026) in view of the possibility of heavy rain and strong winds under the influence of an intense depression formed over the Bay of Bengal.The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has warned of the possibility of landslips, landslides, uprooting of trees, and flash floods, particularly in the hilly areas. The police will impose traffic restrictions on landslide-prone roads in areas including Thamarassery, Thiruvambady, and Koorachundu. Emergency vehicles involved in disaster management operations will be exempted from the restrictions.The district administration has also prohibited recreational activities and fishing in rivers, quarries, tourist destinations, and beaches during the period.The Taluk Emergency Operation Centres (TEOCs) will function round the clock. Rainfall and water-level data will be collected from all villages at hourly intervals and communicated to the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC).Local bodies and village officers have been directed to arrange the evacuation of people living in vulnerable areas to safer locations or relief camps, wherever necessary. Details of relief camps and helpline numbers will be communicated to the public.The police, Fire and Rescue Services, Civil Defence, Aapda Mitra, and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan volunteers have been placed on standby for emergency rescue operations.The district administration has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow instructions issued by the authorities.
