Romanian F-16 Destroys Explosives-Laden Marine Drone Near Black Sea Gas Project

A Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed an explosives-laden marine drone near the country’s strategic Neptun Deep offshore gas project on Thursday, Aug. 20, as Bucharest blamed Russia for what it called a dangerous escalation. The drone was spotted at 6:28 a.m. local time by a commercial vessel, several hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas project and about 80 nautical miles (92 miles; 148 km) east of the Black Sea port city of Constanta, Romania’s Defense Ministry said. Two Romanian F-16s were scrambled to intercept the threat. One fighter subsequently destroyed the drone. The incident comes as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues to push military threats deeper into NATO’s eastern flank, with Romania increasingly reporting drone activity near or inside its territory. Hundreds of workers are currently involved in the Neptun Deep project, which is expected to begin gas production in 2027. The field is considered strategically important for Romania and the wider region as Europe seeks to reduce its dependence on Russian energy. Romania has also reported several Russian drone incursions and crashes in recent months. NATO aircraft have shot down four aerial drones over Romanian territory, with the latest incident reported last weekend.
