Roman Coppola Named Creative Consultant For 2027 Spirit Awards

Oscar nominated filmmaker Roman Coppola will serve in the newly created role of Creative Consultant for the 2027 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Coppola will work alongside Film Independent and President Juan Devis’ team to shape the tone, visual identity and experience for next year’s Spirit Awards. Coppola’s creative guidance will extend beyond the ceremony, helping connect the events surrounding the Awards through a shared artistic vision. Drawing on music, Los Angeles culture and the event’s Hollywood setting, he will explore new partnerships and unexpected collaborations to bring that vision to life throughout the season. “The Spirit Awards have always celebrated artists who challenge conventions and find new ways to tell stories. We believe the Spirits themselves should embrace that same creative freedom,” said Juan Devis, President of Film Independent. “Roman brings a unique sensibility, a sense of play, and a willingness to experiment. He’s a 2016 Emmy nominee for Netflix’s A Very Murray Christmas in Outstanding Television Movie in addition to being a Grammy nominee for Best Video Short Form for Green Day’s “Walking Contradiction”. He’s the co-creator, director, and writer of Prime Video’s Emmy winning series Mozart in the Jungle. He is know for his long running collaboration with Anderson as a producer and writer on such films, including, but not limited to, The Phoenician Scheme, Asteroid City, The French Dispatch, and The Darjeeling Limited. Coppola was also an EP on Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, On The Rocks, Beguiled, and a producer on The Bling Ring and Somewhere. He made his feature directorial debut in 2001 with the 1960s sci-fi inspired movie CQ starring Jeremy Davies, Giancarlo Giannini, Jason Schwartzman and Gérard Depardieu. The Spirit Awards will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2027 at the Hollywood Palladium. The nominees will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 2. The Nominee Brunch will take place on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2027 at The London West Hollywood.
