Beginning his career of covering film and TV at CinemaBlend, he has also appeared on The Flash Podcast and done several radio spots. One of Robert De Niro’s best and grittiest crime movies has returned to streaming. De Niro has been professionally acting for over 60 years, and for the majority of that time, he’s been one of Hollywood’s brightest stars. In 1973, he delivered his breakthrough performance as “Johnny Boy” Civello in Mean Streets, which kicked off his decades-long partnership with director Martin Scorsese. A year later, he starred in The Godfather: Part II as the young Vito Corleone, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Since then, many of De Niro’s best movies have hailed from the crime genre, from The Untouchables in 1987, to Killers of the Flower Moon in 2023. Such offerings from him in the 1990s include Goodfellas, A Bronx Tale, Casino, Heat, and Jackie Brown. As of today, an additional entry from that lineup, which clocks in at 105 minutes, can be accessed on streaming once again. 1997’s Cop Land, which De Niro co-stars in with Sylvester Stallone, is among the many movies that have been added to Paramount+ today. Other notable additions to the platform include Blade Runner 2049, Cloverfield, Million Dollar Baby, Risky Business, The Hangover trilogy, The Sandlot, and Varsity Blues, among others. Bleed For This, The Harvest, The Cured, and Blue Valentine will also become available to stream on Paramount+ later in August, though only to Premium subscribers. Cop Land follows Stallone’s Freddy Heflin, the sheriff in the small town of Garrison, New Jersey, which is home to a group of corrupt NYPD officers, including De Niro’s Detective Moe Tilden. Though Heflin initially protects Tilden and the others, the movie’s events lead to him rebelling against them, igniting an explosive conflict. Other cast members include Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, and Michael Rapaport. Written and directed by James Mangold, Cop Land followed two years after he made his filmmaking debut with Heavy. The crime thriller was released by Miramax on August 13, 1997, the same day as The Fully Monty and Event Horizon. Cop Land earned primarily positive critical reception, and it has a 75% Tomatometer ranking on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also a commercial success, making over $63 million worldwide off a reported $15 million budget. Paramount+ is a fitting home for Cop Land considering that the streaming service will be home to a potential adaptation. It was reported in June that Paramount+ acquired a Cop Land TV show that Mangold is writing and executive producing with The Old Man’s Robert Levine. Mangold will direct the pilot, and Levine will serve as showrunner. This is Mangold’s first TV show since the 1930s-set Damnation, which aired almost a decade ago for one season on the USA Network in the United States, and Netflix in other territories. As for De Niro, he was seen last year in the movies The Alto Knights and Tin Soldier, as well as the Netflix miniseries Zero Day. The Cop Land veteran's upcoming movies include The Whisper Man and Focker-in-Law, both of which arrive later this year on Netflix and in theaters, respectively. Release Date August 15, 1997 Runtime 104 minutes Director James Mangold Producers Bob Weinstein, Cary Woods, Cathy Konrad, Ezra Swerdlow, Harvey Weinstein
