Roadies Rebirth first impression: A promising reset with familiar aggression

Roadies returns for its 21st season with a familiar formula recast as a rebirth. The new edition divides its gang leaders into OGs and NewGs, using the show’s history to create fresh rivalries. The first two episodes, streaming on JioHotstar and Netflix, mix nostalgia, strategy and stories of personal reinvention. The packaging may be new, but the shouting, mind games and displays of strength remain firmly in place. The premiere gives the theme enough energy to work. Nikhil Chinappa and Bani J make the strongest early impressions, while Baseer Ali and Abhishek Malhan are still finding their voices. The contestants also explain what rebirth means to them, adding emotional weight to the auditions. The larger question is whether the season can sustain this momentum once the journey and eliminations begin.Across 20 seasons, Roadies has produced widely shared internet moments and recognisable personalities who have influenced a section of young viewers, particularly in their ideas about fame and fitness. Becoming a Roadie has itself become an ambition. The show has also evolved considerably since Raghu Ram and Rajiv Lakshman led the auditions. Rannvijay Singha, who appeared in the inaugural season, later became a gang leader and went on to host the show. Subsequent seasons introduced gang divisions, with Season 12 winner Prince Narula, actor Neha Dhupia and other celebrities taking charge of contestants. The central structure has remained straightforward. Gang leaders select contestants, travel with them across India and guide them through physically demanding tasks and eliminations. The contestant who survives the journey wins the show for the gang leader. Roadies Rebirth tweaks this format by pitting OGs against NewGs, allowing the opening episodes to revisit old associations while setting up new contests. Chinappa uses this history particularly well. He recalls selecting Bani in Season 4 and points to Baseer’s participation in Season 13, when Chinappa was a gang leader. Fresh from another reality show, Alliance, he appears fit, focussed and ready to play a smart game. He makes valid points and speaks plainly when required, making him the most assured presence among the OGs.Prince and Neha, by comparison, appear tied to the methods of earlier seasons. Shouting and mind games remain their main weapons. There are also moments when Neha, a two-time gang leader, does not allow a contestant to complete his response. Despite being a part of the same gang – The OGs, the duo are fighting amongst themselves for an upper edge. These familiar tactics bring intensity, but they do little to support a season that is presenting itself as a reinvention. Among the NewGs, Bani is the pleasant surprise. Audiences may have recently seen her in Four More Shots Season 4, but Roadies is where she appears most at ease. She is entertaining without trying too hard, defeats contestants at arm wrestling and performs pull-ups with confidence. Her presence makes a convincing case for her position as a gang leader.Baseer understands the format after experiencing it as both a contestant and a host, but he needs more time to establish an individual voice. Abhishek, meanwhile, is completely new to this world. He applies himself, strategises and occasionally overpowers the other NewGs in discussions. The effort is evident, even if his approach is still taking shape. The season places considerable emphasis on contestants with stories of personal rebirth. Karishma Talwar, who was paired opposite Prince in Splitsvilla 8, emerges as one of the promising participants. She speaks about losing her father, entering an abusive marriage and eventually finding herself again. Her account resonates with the judges. Her chemistry with Prince also becomes one of the premiere’s most noticeable threads, prompting him to issue a clarification online. The selection is not limited to conventional Roadies personalities. Preet Tanwar, identified as Bigg Boss 20 contestant Gullu’s brother, brings wit and charm to the auditions. He has an easy ability to generate laughs, even if fitness is not his strongest suit. His presence suggests that the season is willing to look beyond physical prowess while choosing contestants. The episodes are most effective when the gang leaders challenge troubling views instead of treating them as entertainment. One contestant writes in his form that the Hindi word “aurat”, meaning woman, should be banned. He then refuses to answer whether short clothes are responsible for rape. Chinappa confronts him and responds firmly. In another instance, a popular influencer admits that he made online content objectifying women. The gang leaders ask him to return after working on himself. These conversations are welcome, as is the refusal to reward such behaviour with a place on the show.Roadies Rebirth begins with a workable mix of nostalgia and renewal. The opening should work for regular viewers, though the season must move beyond familiar aggression if its promise of rebirth is to have lasting impact.New episodes stream on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 pm.- Ends
