Published Oct 27, 2026, 5:00 PM EDT Antonella Gugliersi (she/them) has been a feature writer for Screen Rant since 2021. While studying for her bachelor’s in Economics & Management, they started writing about movies and TV shows for Turin-based The Unconventional Mag. After a brief internship at TPI, she decided she wanted to pursue journalism and graduated with a degree in International Journalism from Brunel University. ABC ensured that the foundation on which RJ Decker season 3 can be developed is compelling after a very short run of the crime drama’s sophomore season. Based on the 1987 novel Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen, RJ Decker follows Scott Speedman’s titular character as he tries to rebuild his life after serving his prison sentence. If RJ Decker season 1 focused on R.J.’s re-entry into society, season 2 had bigger mysteries to resolve after the murder of Victor Ochoa left the TV series without one key antagonist. The spotlight on R.J.’s personal history and development sets RJ Decker apart from other procedural dramas, despite the ABC TV series falling neatly into the classification, as each episode sees R.J. on a different case, whether he is brought in by the police through Mel or ends up being the one calling the police when things turn sour. Its strong ensemble cast also makes RJ Decker memorable, especially as they all contribute to R.J.’s investigations in one way or another. If season 1’s cliffhanger ending could have easily made things difficult for R.J. given his animosity against Victor Ochoa, and did make things impossible for Emi, as she was unjustly arrested for his murder, RJ Decker season 2’s finale directly endangers R.J. and his relationship with his loved ones. Emi and Mel being on opposite sides of R.J.’s case makes it personal, complicating it even more than it already was given the crime R.J.’s client was arrested for, setting up an exhilarating RJ Decker season 3. ABC Has Yet To Decide On RJ Decker Season 3 With RJ Decker season 2 airing its seventh and last episode of the season on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, it’s too soon to know whether season 3 will happen. ABC has yet to say anything on the matter, and considering how RJ Decker was the last drama to be confirmed as part of ABC’s 2026-2027 TV cycle, there might be some time before we know for sure whether RJ Decker returns for season 3. ABC only renewed RJ Decker for season 2 two weeks after season 1’s finale aired. While that might also happen in this instance, it’s unlikely to do so, as only extremely popular TV shows receive early renewals. While RJ Decker season 2’s premiere was watched by a record 9.61 million multiplatform viewers in the first week after its release, and RJ Decker proved a streaming success in Summer 2026, making its cancellation a remote possibility, it’s unlikely that we know about its fate with certainty anytime soon. When Will RJ Decker Season 3 Potentially Release? MovieStillsDB RJ Decker season 1 debuted in midseason during the 2025-2026 TV cycle. However, RJ Decker season 2 returned much earlier, among the first ABC TV series to do so as part of its 2026 Fall lineup. Its different scheduling between seasons 1 and 2 makes predicting a time for a potential season 3 return difficult. RJ Decker season 2 taking over High Potential’s usual Tuesday night slot can also affect when season 3 returns, if it does. After all, with High Potential not returning in 2026, instead premiering in early 2027, it’s unknown whether the change in scheduling will influence its ratings positively or negatively. ABC will likely have multiple things to consider when discussing RJ Decker’s renewal, and its status as High Potential’s replacement might also affect its future potential schedule. What RJ Decker Season 3's Story Will Be ABC RJ Decker season 2 thoroughly built on season 1’s story, giving R.J. a more stable personal and professional life. RJ Decker season 2, episode 4 even introduced R.J.’s father, opening RJ Decker season 3 up to the possibility of showing more of R.J.’s family. RJ Decker season 2’s introduction of Trudy as R.J.’s love interest also compels season 3 to continue that storyline, especially if R.J.’s lingering feelings for Emi threaten their relationship. RJ Decker season 3 would also inevitably focus on different cases-of-the-week. Hopefully, the dynamic of those might also change in season 3, as R.J. makes a name for himself as a private investigator. How those unfold will nevertheless be influenced by RJ Decker season 2’s finale, as Mel has always been an important contributor in the resolution of R.J.’s cases and vice versa. If season 2’s finale completely changes R.J. and Mel’s bond, RJ Decker season 3 will need to focus on the mending of that central relationship.
