Rib remodelling can give you a Kim Kardashian waist. But at what cost?

Rib remodelling is gaining attention for surgically creating a narrower, more defined waistline. The procedure requires careful consideration of complications, recovery demands and technique-specific limitations.Rib-remodelling is a cosmetic procedure that promises to change the way your torso looks. (Photo: AI Generative)New Delhi,Nov 3, 2026 11:09 ISTIf a smaller waist and an hourglass figure are on your beauty wish list, there's a cosmetic procedure that promises to change the way your torso looks. It's called rib remodelling, and it is attracting attention online for its potential to create a more defined waistline without relying solely on diet and exercise. The internet, of course, has made the appeal hard to miss. Dramatic before-and-after pictures showcase bodies with pronounced curves and narrower waists, bringing the procedure into conversations about the lengths people are willing to go to achieve their ideal silhouette. With celebrity figures such as Kim Kardashian often associated with the hourglass aesthetic, it's easy to see why the idea has caught on.But rib remodelling is not a non-invasive beauty treatment or a quick fix. It involves altering the lower ribs, which sit close to vital structures in the chest. The prospect of a more sculpted waist might be appealing, but what does the procedure actually involve, and what are the risks?Dr V Manjunath, associate consultant, Plastic Surgery, HOSMAT Hospitals, explains. What is rib remodelling? Rib remodelling is a cosmetic surgical procedure intended to improve the contour of the torso and create a more defined waistline. It involves manipulating the lower ribs, particularly the 11th and 12th ribs, through surgical removal or controlled fractures, depending on the technique used. While rib manipulation has traditionally been performed in other surgical settings, it is increasingly being discussed within the field of aesthetic surgery as a way to alter the shape of the torso. "The procedure aims to improve the contour of the torso and the waistline," says Dr Manjunath. The principle is relatively straightforward: changing the position or shape of the lower ribs can alter the body's outline and potentially create a narrower-looking waist. However, the final result depends on the surgical technique, the individual's anatomy and the healing process. Despite the use of the term 'minimally invasive' in descriptions of some techniques, rib remodelling is still a surgical procedure.According to Dr Manjunath, the approach may involve an incision near the posterior axillary fold to access the lower ribs. In ultrasound-guided techniques, surgeons may use specialised instruments, including an oscillating saw or a piezotome, to create controlled fractures in the ribs. Some techniques use smaller incisions along the sides or back of the torso. These may make the resulting scars less noticeable, but smaller incisions do not mean that the procedure is risk-free.The ribs are located close to the lungs, pleura, muscles and nerves. This makes a thorough understanding of chest-wall anatomy and careful surgical planning essential.Recovery also involves more than simply allowing the incisions to heal. Patients may be required to wear a corset for four to six weeks to help shape the torso and maintain the intended contour, Dr Manjunath explains. That means anyone considering the procedure needs to account for the recovery period, the discomfort involved and the practical demands of wearing a corset after surgery. What are the risks of rib remodelling? As with any surgical procedure, rib remodelling carries potential complications. These may include pain, swelling, infection, bleeding, scarring, changes in sensation, asymmetry and an unsatisfactory cosmetic result. The nature of the procedure also means that injuries to surrounding structures are a concern. Depending on the technique, complications can include damage to the pleura or lungs. A pneumothorax, in which air collects between the lung and the chest wall and can cause the lung to collapse partially or completely, is one possible complication.Dr Manjunath cites a study covering rib-remodelling procedures performed between 2018 and 2024, which reported an overall complication rate of approximately 3.7%. The study also reported hyperpigmentation in 17.5% of cases, non-consolidation in 15.1%, pressure ulcers associated with corset use in 12.7% and burns in 12.7%.Non-consolidation refers to a failure of a fractured bone to heal adequately. In the context of rib remodelling, this is an important consideration because the procedure deliberately alters the ribs. The reported incidence of pneumothorax in the cited study was approximately 0.17%, Dr Manjunath says. These figures need to be interpreted carefully. Complication rates can vary according to the technique, patient selection, surgical expertise and how complications are defined and recorded. The findings of one study should not be treated as a universal estimate of the risks for every patient or technique. For anyone considering the procedure, the important question is not simply whether complications are uncommon in a particular study, but which complications are possible, how they would be managed and what the recovery process would involve.Dr Manjunath advises patients to look beyond the anticipated cosmetic outcome and understand the recovery process, potential long-term implications and risks associated with the specific technique being offered. How much does rib remodelling cost in India? There is no single price for rib remodelling in India. The cost can vary considerably depending on the technique used, the hospital, the surgeon's expertise, anaesthesia, pre-operative investigations and post-operative care.An individual consultation is necessary to obtain a reliable estimate. What are the different rib-remodelling techniques?Rib remodelling is not a single, standardised procedure. Different approaches use different methods to alter or stabilise the lower ribs, and they can vary in terms of incision size, fixation, recovery requirements and cost.Dr Manjunath identifies five approaches: Kudzaev, UUAIST, RibXcar, WASP and RIBOSS.Kudzaev and UUAIST approaches involve controlled rib fractures or remodelling. RibXcar and WASP use ultrasound-guided techniques, while RIBOSS uses titanium plate fixation to provide structural stability. These approaches are not interchangeable. Their suitability depends on the patient's anatomy, the intended outcome and the surgeon's assessment. Patients should ask which technique is being proposed, how it works, what evidence supports its use and what complications have been reported.Anyone considering it should consult a suitably qualified plastic surgeon, understand the risks and limitations of the specific technique, and have realistic expectations about the outcome.A narrower waist may be the desired result. Making an informed decision about the surgery, however, requires looking beyond the before-and-after pictures.- Ends
