On the night of September 26, 2022, three of the four pipes of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines exploded on the seabed of the Baltic Sea. 465 thousand metric tons of methane were released into the atmosphere. The long-standing and strategic link between Russia and Germany severed for good. Today, four years later, a Ukrainian national is awaiting trial in Germany, another has been arrested in Croatia. But German citizens still have many questions. Nord Stream was not just a gas pipeline. It was a political choice – one of energy dependence on Russia. The German government stood by it for twenty years, despite repeated warnings from Washington, Warsaw, and Kyiv. the German people are still paying the price today.
