Review: Rhinoshield’s iPhone 18 Pro bumper case is minimalist but surprisingly protective

iPhone bumper cases have been a fan-favorite since the iPhone 4 bumpers, but options these days are few and far between. Rhinoshield offers a decent option for those wanting a minimal case. Apple finally got back into the bumper business with the iPhone Air last year. I was hoping Apple would expand their bumper case to the iPhone 18 Pro (like they did with the clear case and iPhone 11), but unfortunately they did not. In my search for another option, I came across Rhinoshield’s Minimalist Impact Bumper case. Key Details The Impact Bumper Case has a fit similar to most other bumpers, where the lip on the screen is fairly minor, while the lip on the back is a little larger. A unique feature of this case, and one that I quite like, is that it has special supports that keep the camera plateau and lenses off of wherever your phone is resting, which I particularly appreciate considering the aluminum 17 Pro and 18 Pro. This results in a far more protective case than your typical bumper would be. It also eliminates the annoying wobble when using your phone on a flat surface. The case’s fit, however, is not quite what I was hoping for. It’s somewhat loose, and you can easily bend the edges outward, and I do wonder if over time they may end up getting stretched out. I don’t think the phone flying out of the case when dropped will be an issue though (and I have unintentionally tested that). That said, the material of the entire case is a hard plastic rather than rubber, so hopefully it will be fine in the long run. Rhinoshield says that it is made entirely of just one material, and is therefore 100% recyclable. The case comes in three colors, which are matched to the iPhone 18 Pro colors: white, blue, and black (sorry Burgundy fans). The blue, which is what I have, is close to Glacier but not perfect. Downsides There are some downsides, however. My primary gripe with the case is that the buttons can be hard to press. For some reason they went with a nearly flush design, and the way that the buttons are designed makes them mushy. The material choice as a whole may be a downside. To me, it feels cheaper than the likes of Apple’s iPhone Air bumper, but some may end up preferring it. I certainly prefer it to the materials of a typical TPU/rubber clear case. The material and loose design also seem to attract pocket dust. If you use Apple’s Wrist Strap or Crossbody Strap, be aware that this case does not have the required loop connection points. Conclusion The Rhinoshield bumper is definitely not perfect, and I still hope that Apple will extend their bumpers to other iPhones. In the end though, I have decided to keep the case, for one primary reason: it lets me have a near-caseless experience without worry of the fragile aluminum getting chipped or dented. As far as I can tell, the bumper case is usually only available from their own website, so the price of about $30 matches the price of Apple’s ($39) after shipping. You can get the Rhinoshield Minimalist Impact Bumper case here. (Occasionally, an Amazon listing will pop up, so you can give that a try as well.)
