Residents will intensify their protests demanding the construction of a cattle underpass (CUP) on the National Highway at Chombala. The protest, launched last month under the aegis of Janakeeya Prakshobha Samithi, completed 19 days on Monday (August 17).The protesters are urging authorities to construct a CUP near Chombala Block Office, citing concerns that access to the Government Veterinary Hospital and the mini stadium would be cut off once the National Highway construction is completed.“We have decided to intensify our protest for the CUP. Complaints have already been filed with the local MLA, MP and other officials. But the authorities are yet to heed our demand,” said a member of the samithi.Protesters said the veterinary hospital, located adjacent to the block office, is used by people from Azhiyur, Onchiyam, Eramala and Chorode grama panchayats and Mahe, who bring cattle, other livestock and domestic birds for treatment.Earlier this week, the samithi organised a human chain pressing its demand. The chain stretched from the Chombala Block Office premises to the mini stadium. Several women and children, along with elected representatives, social activists, politicians and representatives of cultural organisations, took part.A public meeting held afterwards was inaugurated by Azhiyur grama panchayat president K. Leela. Janakeeya Prakshobha Samithi chairperson V.P. Anil Kumar presided. Published - August 17, 2026 07:46 pm IST
