SHAIKMOHIDEEN Urging the Tirunelveli Corporation to take immediate steps for sterilising stray dogs to control their proliferation, members of Sripuram Welfare Association near Tirunelveli Junction submitted a petition to the Corporation on Tuesday.Led by association president B. Balakrishnan, the petitioners said the dog menace had become unbearable in the area as residents’ repeated appeal to the Corporation for animal birth control had been ignored. Those going for morning and evening walks and the children going out were attacked by dogs.“Hence, the Corporation, which administered anti-rabies vaccine to stray dogs, should organise special camp in Sripuram for sterilising these animals to control their numbers in our area,” Mr. Balakrishnan said.Water supplyA group of residents from Thiyagaraja Nagar in Ward 55 submitted a petition seeking piped drinking water supply to houses at least for an hour every day. Since the groundwater level had depleted this summer, most open wells and borewells in the houses of Thiyagaraja Nagar had dried up.The Corporation should ensure supply of drinking water to Thiyagaraja Nagar every day by constructing an overhead tank and a drinking water pumping station from the ground-level sump in their area, they said.Councillor (ward 55) S. Muthusubramanian submitted a separate petition with a similar demand. “Since a huge quarry pit was filled for creating park on the 6th street of Thiyagaraja Nagar, this spot can be excavated and used for constructing a ground-level sump with 10 lakh litre capacity. An overhead tank can be built in the park for effectively taking the drinking water to the houses on the Corporation’s boundary,” Mr. Muthusubramanian said.School kitchenThe School Management Committee of Kallanai Corporation Primary School submitted a petition seeking the renovation of the kitchen in the school considering the safety of the children and the cook.A group of residents from V.M. Chathram submitted a petition seeking the Corporation’s immediate intervention to stop the laying of drinking water pipes inside the Peerkkankulam and Murthy Nainarkulam in their area, which receive rainwater during the monsoon.Since the pipes were laid inside the waterbody in violation of the rulings given by the Madras High Court on various occasions, this unlawful activity should be stopped immediately, the petitioners said.
