Residents’ federation to hold torchlight vigil against Kodungaiyur waste-to-energy plant

JOTHI RAMALINGAM The Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Association (FNCRWA) will hold a torchlight vigil and public demonstration on September 27 against the proposed 2,100-tonne waste-to-energy plant at Kodungaiyur. The event, titled “Prosperous north Chennai – A dream for the next generation” has demanded the proposed waste-to-energy plant by the Greater Chennai Corporation be dropped and the existing incinerator be shut down, according to the federation members.They alleged that the incinerator had violated environmental norms and had only resumed operations recently after remaining shut for four months.The association also called for the adoption of the “Green Chennai Initiative”, an alternative solid waste management plan prepared by the federation with environmental experts and submitted to the State government and the civic body.The 327-acre Kodungaiyur dumpyard site, after biomining, should be developed as a public library and environmental park with a restored canal, the association said. Further, demands for a special ecological plan for Manali, Ennore, Tiruvottiyur, Kodungaiyur, and Korukkupet, transparency in plans at north Chennai development and greater focus on the region in the Third Master Plan for Chennai were also put forth in a statement.
