Resident Evil Remakes Will Eventually "Catch Up" With The Main Series

The Resident Evil timeline is a pretty messy one, even by video game standards. Capcom has previously confirmed that somehow, Resi’s remakes take place on the same timeline as the original games on which they’re based. Now Jun Takeuchi has muddied the waters even more by confirming that eventually, the remakes will catch up and crossover with RE’s new numbered titles. Merging Resident Evil's Two Tracks In the Biohazard 30th Special Mook, which celebrates three decades since the launch of the original Resident Evil, director Takeuchi explains that the series is currently split into two tracks - one for new entries, and another for remakes. However, the implication is that eventually, those two tracks will become one. “Someday, the remake series will catch up with the era of the numbered titles, and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens,” Takeuchi confirms (HT RENews_X). “We have been gradually preparing for that since around Resident Evil Village. The appearance of names such as Umbrella and Spencer, as well as the return of Raccoon City in Requiem, are also in preparation for a crossover.” Takeuchi goes on to explain that Biohazard, the seventh numbered entry in the RE series, was the game Capcom decided would be a turning point for the series. The little references connecting games were supposed to be nothing more than fan service. However, fans latched onto those little gestures to such an extent that developers “decided to respond to users’ expectations and pushed this setup further in Village and Requiem.” That means, if you’re a hardcore Resident Evil fan who hyper-analyzed Easter eggs in Biohazard and Village, you are, in part, responsible for the series returning to a flattened Raccoon City in Requiem. Things are going to be messy, there will be plot holes, but the two tracks will eventually merge, and that’s got some fans convinced they now know what’s coming next. So This Means We're Getting A Resident Evil 6 Remake One Day, Right? The biggest fan takeaway from Takeuchi’s insight is that the director has effectively confirmed there will eventually be a Resident Evil 6 remake. I’m not sure I’d go as far as to say confirmed, but the way Takeuchi has framed Capcom’s plans for the future of the series, it certainly sounds like everything, at least the numbered entries, that released before Biohazard is going to need a remake. Every Resident Evil remake so far has been warmly received and adored by fans, but that’s because they’re remakes of games that were well-loved the first time around. Remaking RE5 and RE6, if that is part of this grand, confusing plan won’t be quite so easy. The former is problematic and will need to be changed a lot, and as much hype as there is for an RE6 remake following Takeuchi’s comments, let’s just say it didn’t receive nearly as much critical acclaim as the games that came before it. Before you argue, RE6 has the worst rating on Metacritic for a numbered Resident Evil game by a considerable distance. Even though Capcom is already planning for the inevitable catch-up, we’re still years away from seeing exactly how that might pan out. The Code Veronica remake is up next, and that’s probably still at least a year away. It seems likely the original Resident Evil will be remade after that. Perhaps then Capcom will really be forced into figuring out how on earth it remakes 5 and 6 to keep this lucrative train rolling.
