Even though a vocal minority of the Resident Evil fanbase might have ended up putting Zach Cregger off ever working on the series again, the movie does at least appear to have been worth the months of discourse. As we reported earlier in the week, Resident Evil is now the highest-rated movie game of all time, beating the previous winner, Sonic 3, by a wide margin. With the Resident Evil movie hitting theatres a few days ago, it’s now facing the court of public opinion, which seems to be a little less positive about the whole thing. Beyond the divisive comedic tone, the main issue appears to be how the film ends, which really isn’t going down well with a lot of people. Resident Evil Movie’s Ending Is Upsetting Most People I Bet Resi Fans Will Like What It’s Trying To Do Resident Evil focuses on organ courier and everyman Bryan Hodukavich as he travels into Raccoon City to deliver an important package. During that trip, Bryan ends up getting bitten and infected by a random zombie, turning the last act of the movie into a race against time as he tries to get cured by some scientists in a, you guessed it, secret laboratory. Sadly, things don’t go Bryan’s way and, despite the scientists managing to make a cure, no one injects him with it, and he ends up mutating into a big Birkin-esque monster with multiple limbs that tears everyone apart. The movie ends with the cure dropping down onto the streets of Raccoon City as a helicopter shines its lights on the completely turned and enraged Bryan. It’s, uh, quite a depressing ending, especially considering the rest of the film’s more comedic tone and how much it gets you to like Bryan. Unsurprisingly, a lot of moviegoers aren’t taking it well, as social media is full of negative and upset reactions to the ending and how “stupid” some of the characters act so that it can all play out. While general audiences don’t like the “horrible” finale and would have clearly preferred it if Bryan made it out alive and well, it’s actually quite a cool twist to have the film essentially tell the story of one of Resident Evil’s minibosses. Many speculated that the movie would end up being about the life of who turns out to be a random zombie, and that’s kind of the case. It’s just not too surprising that many aren’t happy with such a gutting conclusion.
