Resident Evil 2026 Sequel Plans Get Definitive Update From Zach Cregger

The world of Resident Evil is large, and Zach Cregger is sharing his thoughts on a potential sequel to his 2026 reboot. Cregger marks the latest filmmaker to put their stamp on the film incarnations of Capcom's iconic survival horror franchise, with Paul W.S. Anderson having written and mostly directed the first six films while Johannes Roberts wrote and directed the previous 2021 reboot, Welcome to Raccoon City. The Weapons alum is taking an approach closer to that of Anderson's, telling an original story, albeit still set in the world of the games by being set alongside Resident Evil 2's story. With two weeks left until the film's release, ComicBook.com interviewed Zach Cregger to discuss Resident Evil and his approach to the franchise. When asked whether he had thoughts on a sequel to the survival horror reboot, the co-writer/director had a pretty definitive update, confirming the film "was designed to be a one-off," and feeling that the "itch was scratched" to explore the world. Even still, Cregger didn't fully close the door to the possibility of a future: Zach Cregger: But I can’t help myself. Like there are always ideas percolating, and I already have some thoughts of like what could happen … going forward. So who knows, dude; anything can happen. Cregger's reveal that he currently has no plans for a Resident Evil sequel is sure to raise a sense of curiosity for both the film and franchise as a whole. Thus far, the co-writer/director has not released any follow-ups to his prior films, though is currently in the process of developing a Weapons prequel script centered on Amy Madison's Gladys. Notably, Cregger is not expected to direct said film, which is slated for a September 2028 release, and if he similarly determines ideas for a Resident Evil follow-up, he could at least help develop the story or script. Even looking at prior titles in the series, Sony has pretty much always sought to leave the door open for future installments. From Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ending with Milla Jovovich's Alice still alive and continuing her quest to fight the undead, to Welcome to Raccoon City explicitly setting up a sequel with Tom Hopper's Wesker revived by Lily Gao's Ada Wong, the studio was fueled to keep their success streak alive after previously holding the record for the highest-grossing film franchise based on a video game. More notably is that he says 2026's Resident Evil was explicitly designed as a one-off. Given he's previously discussed his intent to recreate the feeling of what an ordinary gamer would be like thrust into the dangerous world of Raccoon City, he may simply mean that the film will offer closure for Austin Abrams' Bryan. This would also make a lot of sense for avoiding including any legacy Resident Evil characters, so as to not inadvertently disrupt canon or put a filmmaker in a corner if a sequel got produced. While Cregger may not himself have any established plans for a Resident Evil sequel, Sony is sure to be looking into some right now. Beyond the aforementioned prior success at the box office, recent projections have put the film anywhere from a $35–50 million opening weekend, which would make it the biggest domestic opening ever for the franchise, and if it can similarly become the first to score a Fresh score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the studio won't want to sit on their laurels for too long.
