Resident Alien’s finale brings Alan Tudyk's sci-fi dramedy to an emotional conclusion by giving each of its characters a fitting but bittersweet farewell. The sci-fi show reached the end of an era in 2025, much to the dismay of fans everywhere. The cancellation was baffling from a quality standpoint. The concept was fresh. The high-quality storytelling could have easily continued for many more seasons. Plus, reviews from critics and audiences only kept getting better with every season. Unfortunately, the reason Resident Alien was canceled after four seasons was money. The ratings simply weren’t there to justify paying for a fifth season. Luckily, Showrunner Chris Sheridan knew Resident Alien season 4 would be the last outing, and so he wanted to write a proper finale. While there are signs the Resident Alien cast could return for spinoffs or sequels, there are no confirmed plans. The storylines left dangling in "The End Is Here" aren't the same as the huge cliffhangers in Resident Alien season 3's ending. More episodes don’t feel necessary for the show to be complete. To close everything out, Sheridan brought back most of Resident Alien's best characters, though a handful are relegated to quick mentions and brief cameos. With just 45 minutes to wrap up four years of storytelling, the showrunner did an exceptional job. He crafted a sharp script that concluded the most essential storylines. Resident Alien Ends With A Shockingly Familiar Harry Replacement Michael Cassidy Returns As Dr. Ethan Stone AND Alien Ethan Resident Alien's penultimate episode, "Tunnel Vision," concluded with Asta Twelvetrees (Sara Tomko) teasing the arrival of a new alien threat. As "The End Is Here" reveals, it turns out that another of Harry's (Alan Tudyk) people has come for another attempt at what his predecessor was supposed to do—kill all humans on Earth. Michael Cassidy's return to the Resident Alien cast for the first time since his exit in season 2's "The Weight" briefly sees him reprising his role as Dr. Ethan Stone. After an alien ship crushes Ethan's car in the opening seconds of "The End Is Here," Cassidy then takes on the new role of Harry's alien successor. The new Ethan turns out to be very similar to Tudyk's character from Resident Alien's earliest episodes. While largely cold and emotionless, his interactions with the Patience townsfolk show signs of that ice beginning the break. So, Cassidy's comeback is a clear sign that Alien Ethan will embark upon a very similar journey to Harry and will probably decide to spare humanity. "The End Is Here" also strongly alludes to the possibility that Harry isn't the first character to experience this arc. Aliens have been established as visiting Earth for a very long time, and yet the planet remains alive and active. So, Harry is probably the latest in a long line of aliens to have his mind changed by humanity, and Alien Ethan is the next one. Resident Alien's Finale Gives Harry Vanderspeigle The Happy Ending That Has Been Teased Since Season 3 Harry & Heather's Reunion Was The Best Ending For Alan Tudyk's Character Harry starts getting cold feet about leaving Earth behind in "The End Is Here," worried that everyone will forget him when he is gone. However, he has Heather (Edit Patterson) and their alien babies waiting for him on a distant planet. Heather's debut in season 3 gave Harry his first real love story in Resident Alien, so it's not a surprise that they have ended up together. While "The End Is Here" stops short of actually showing Harry with his new family, it does have a stunning shot of Tudyk's character arriving in orbit of his new home planet. Thankfully, he was able to help save Earth one more time before leaving and was given an emotional sendoff by pretty much all the show's main characters. The Fate Of Every Other Main Resident Alien Character The Finale Reveals Asta & The Other Patience Townsfolk Are All Given Great Endings Sheridan finds time in the finale to give Resident Alien's core characters bespoke endings that all suit them perfectly. Asta's decision to go into humanitarian efforts sees her taking her nursing talents away from Patience, which suits her selfless personality perfectly. D'arcy Bloom (Alice Wetterlund) finds a young member of her AA group to mentor. After D'arcy sees her about to go down a very similar path that saw the beginning of her own self-destructiveness, Resident Alien strongly implies that Wetterlund's character is about to embark on a career as a ski coach, paying off a series-long arc of her search for new meaning after crashing out of the Olympics. Perhaps most excitingly, Sheriff Mike (Corey Reynolds) and Deputy Liv (Elizabeth Bowen) end the show as secret agents and have been employed to keep an eye on alien activity. Too young to make any real decisions about their own futures, Max (Judah Prehn) and Sahar (Gracelyn Awad Rinke) are likely to continue with their lives, but will surely grow into even bigger heroes. Ben (Levi Fiehler) is still Patience's mayor by the end of Resident Alien's finale, and Kate (Meredith Garretson) decides to end her teaching career and get back into law. So, compared to the others, the Hawthorne family have relatively pedestrian endings. That said, seeing as they were swept into the drama against their will, they're probably fine with that. How Resident Alien's Ending Sets Up A Revival Or Spinoff Harry's Teased Return & The Existence Of Fairies Leave Narrative Doors Ajar Even though "The End Is Here" functions brilliantly as Resident Alien's final episode, showrunner Chris Sheridan sneaks in some subtle moments that could be built upon if the show were to ever return or become a larger franchise. For instance, Harry gives Max a way to summon him if Alien Ethan becomes a threat, which feels like a great way to revive the show. Similarly, Resident Alien's finale reveals the existence of fairies within the show's universe, a fact that Liv tricks out of her new employer. So, the saga isn't just a sci-fi story anymore, but has edged into fantasy at the last possible second. This twist could form the basis of a compelling Resident Alien spinoff, but the show, as we all know it, is over. The only hope at this point is the fact that Alan Tudyk and showrunner Chris Sheridan are open to doing either a Resident Alien miniseries or movie. It would require production companies and studios to get on board, which I find unlikely, but we can always hope.
