Report: Jaxson Dart diagnosed with MCL sprain, expected to miss time

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart has been diagnosed with an MCL sprain, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported. He will undergo further testing Tuesday, but is expected to miss time. Dart went down on the first drive of Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams after a defender hit his knee. He headed to the injury tent and later went back to the locker room under his own power, but with a noticeable limp. ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan reported Dart wanted to go back into the game, but the Giants ultimately ruled him out. He returned to the sideline for the remainder of the contest as Jameis Winston came in at quarterback. The Giants’ offense struggled mightily after Dart’s departure as the Rams cruised to the 28-6 victory. New York could not find the end zone, settling for two field goals, while Los Angeles dominated on both sides of the ball. Davante Adams had a monster night in light of Puka Nacua’s absence, totaling eight catches for 195 yards and two touchdowns. He was the top target for Matthew Stafford, who went 22-for-31 for 327 yards and four touchdowns. However, after making the throw, the Giants quarterback’s knee appeared to land awkwardly after making contact with a Rams defender, and he remained on the ground. Dart was later ruled out as the second half began, the Giants said. Additionally, ESPN’s Laura Rutledge provided context from inside the tunnel and also spoke briefly with New York general manager Joe Schoen. “The Giants just told me that quarterback Jaxson Dart is officially ruled out of this game,” Rutledge said on the broadcast. “This just happened in the tunnel, actually. I witnessed one of the athletic training staff members going up to another staff member and saying, ‘They just took his uniform.’ “… Another comment I wanted to provide for you guys is that Joe Schoen, the GM of the Giants, just walked past me. His quote to me was, ‘He’s going to be okay.’ They’re still finding more information. He did receive X-rays, though, here at the stadium.” With the loss, the Giants fall to 2-1 through the first two weeks of the NFL season. They will now return home to take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 3. Winston is listed as the primary backup on the New York depth chart.
