Renewal Changes for Most Commercial Lines Decrease in July and Q2, Says Ivans

Year over year, average U.S. commercial premium renewals for July increased in all lines except workers’ compensation, according to the Ivans Index. However, month over month, commercial auto, business owners policy, general liability, commercial property and umbrella saw a decrease, while workers’ comp experienced an increase, said Chicago-based Ivans. Premium renewal rate change by line of business for July 2026 highlights include: Commercial Auto: 4.03%, down from 4.58% last month. BOP: 5.94%, down slightly from 5.97% at the end of June. General Liability: 4.99%, down from 5.33% last month. Commercial Property: 6.16%, down from 6.24% in June. Umbrella: 7.42%, down slightly from 7.60% in June. Workers’ Compensation: -1.26%, up from -1.45% last month. Looking at the second quarter 2026, Applied Systems’ Ivans said average premium renewal rate averaged 4.93%, a decrease compared to 5.28% in Q1 2026. The line with the biggest decrease from Q1 to Q2 was umbrella, going from an average premium rate change of 9.36% in Q1 to 7.96% in Q2. Workers’ comp premium renewal rate change averaged -1.37% in Q2, up from -1.73% in Q1. The Ivans Index analyzes more than 120 million data transactions, and includes more than 38,000 agencies and 700 carriers and managing general agents.
