The Intern has won a major box office battle against The Odyssey. 2026's The Intern (Inteon) is a South Korean remake of the 2015 Nancy Meyers movie of the same name, which starred Anne Hathaway opposite Robert De Niro and made $195.8 million against a reported budget of just $30 million. The new movie was directed by Kim Do-Young (Once We Were Us) and stars Choi Min-sik (Oldboy, I Saw the Devil) as a sixtysomething man who gets hired as an intern at a fashion company, where he forms an unlikely bond with the young female CEO, played by Han So-hee (Gyeongseong Creature). The supporting cast of the Intern remake also includes My Dictator's Ryu Hye-young, The Tale of Nokdu's Kang Tae-oh, and Study Group's Yoon Sang-jeong. The Korean Film Council (the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's official film organization) has officially announced that The Intern is the No. 1 movie in South Korea for September 18. Their chart is ranked by admissions, and the movie managed to earn 61,127, beating the 55,190 admissions forThe Odyssey, which is the No. 2 title for the day. This therefore officially ends the epic's reign at No. 1, where it has remained on the chart for 43 straight days since it debuted in South Korea on August 5 (roughly three weeks after it debuted in the U.S.). Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has proven to be a global phenomenon, with its total $81 million South Korean gross contributing to a whopping $1.084 billion international gross and a $1.689 billion global gross that makes it the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time. This is the end of an era for The Odyssey, though its ticket sales are close enough to The Intern's that it may climb back to No. 1 to add more non-consecutive days atop the chart to its overall record. While it has been knocked to No. 2 in South Korea, it has more than proven its longevity, especially considering the fact that it is still taking in more than a number of major American and South Korean hits in the region. Below, see the Top 10 movies of September 18 in South Korea: Rank Title Admissions #1 The Intern 61,127 #2 The Odyssey 55,190 #3 Obsession 31,447 #4 Resident Evil 21,384 #5 Spider-Man: Brand New Day 6,108 #6 Reawakened Man 5,124 #7 The Assassin(s) 4,319 #8 The Drama 2,892 #9 The Girl Who Leapt Through Time 2,860 #10 Digimon Adventure & Digimon Adventure Our War Game! 2,007 To put The Intern's success in terms of the domestic box office (which measures ticket sales in the United States and Canada), presuming the average ticket price is roughly $15, it would have made $916,905 in a single day. On the most recent recorded Friday at the domestic box office (September 11), only nine movies made more than that. This is a remarkable achievement for South Korea, considering the fact that the relatively small country only has a population of 52 million, which is significantly smaller than the U.S. and Canada's combined population of 383 million. If The Intern's Friday gross was adjusted to match the difference in population, the movie would have earned roughly $6.7 million, which would have made it the second highest-grossing domestic movie on September 11, between the Alan Ritchson action-comedy Runner ($2.6 million) and the legacy sequel Practical Magic 2 ($13.1 million). It remains to be seen how high The Intern is able to climb by the end of its run, both in South Korea and globally. However, the fact that it was able to topple 2026's The Odyssey shows that it could have the momentum to become a major hit. Enjoy ScreenRant's box office coverage?
