Redmi Note 17 Pro Max review: Should you take note?

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max sits at the top of the Redmi Note series, bringing you a 10,000mAh battery and an eye-catching design. At Rs 49,999, the Note 17 Pro Max does cost a premium. But does it deliver? India Today Tech reviews.The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max starts at Rs 49,999 in India.When you hear the term “Pro Max” for any phone, you probably expect the device to be the best a brand could offer. No, we are not talking about the iPhone 18 Pro Max today. Instead, Xiaomi has brought back the Pro Max label to the Redmi Note series with the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max.To bring you up to speed, we did have the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max and Redmi Note 10 Pro Max – a fan favourite even today – half a decade ago. Now, it appears that Xiaomi is confident that the Note 17 Pro Max can live up to the legacy of two of the most iconic phones of their time.At a starting price of Rs 49,999, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max does cost a premium, but does it deliver? India Today Tech spent some time using the Note 17 Pro Max, and here is our full review.Redmi Note 17 Pro Max designThe Note 17 Pro Max looks familiar and different at the same time. If you compare it to the Note 15 Pro Plus we saw in January, the phone is quite different – there is no more vegan leather back, the camera module is now more square-ish on the top left, and gone is the quad-curved display. But the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max looks quite similar to the rest of the Note 17 series. The Note 17 Pro Max looks quite different from the Note 15 Pro Plus we saw earlier this year. There are two cutouts on the camera module and a separate ring around the flash that looks nice. The Secret Sunrise shade we have here changes colour under direct sunlight which adds an interesting element. Otherwise, the phone looks white for the most part – something that reminds me of the Oppo Reno phones. The back panel is made of fibreglass.You get a plastic frame – at this price, you do get aluminium frames in phones like the Nothing Phone 4a Pro and Xiaomi’s own Redmi Turbo 5. At a thickness of 8.65 mm (8.57mm for the Secret Sunrise), the Note 17 Pro Max is not too thick considering the 10,000mAh battery underneath. Though it does take some time to get used to the weight of the phone at 229 grams. Like the Note 17 Pro, you get IP66/IP68/IP69/IP69K ratings for dust and water resistance on the Note 17 Pro Max. Xiaomi says it will also bring an underwater recording mode soon to the device via a software update – we can only judge this feature when it arrives though.Redmi Note 17 Pro Max display and soundBringing our attention to the front of the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max, you get the same 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate from the Note 17 Pro and that is not a bad thing. The bezels are quite slim with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for protection. The Note 17 Pro Max gets an AMOLED display that can show over 68 billion colours. The Note 17 Pro Max gets a peak brightness of 3,500 nits with a high brightness mode of 2,000 nits. This meant that while using the device outdoors even during the day, I had virtually no problem with seeing the contents of the screen. For places like Delhi, this is definitely a boon to have.Coming to video streaming, Xiaomi says that the display is a 12-bit panel, delivering over 68 billion colours. In practice, you will find the screen to be quite punchy. Combine this with the large screen size, and the Note 17 Pro Max feels ideal for watching videos. Though in some cases, it does seem to be a bit on the warmer side. There is HDR support on YouTube as well as Netflix, along with Dolby Vision.This display is paired with stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. The speakers can get quite loud. For the most part, audio quality is good too. However, at a 400 per cent volume boost, you do lack some clarity.Redmi Note 17 Pro Max performancePerformance is where things take a turn. The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset. This chipset is paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage. While this is a new 4nm chipset, the stakes around performance are quite high at this price. The Note 17 Pro Max can handle some gaming. For starters, the OnePlus Nord 6 uses the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 SoC, a more capable processor than what powers the Note 17 Pro Max. Even devices which are not focused on performance, like the Nothing Phone 4a Pro come with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4.Granted that the memory crisis has made things tough for phonemakers, prices across the board have increased. But the Redmi Turbo 5 is also available with the MediaTek Dimensity 8500 today for well under Rs 50,000.Though this does not mean the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is far behind. At least in day-to-day use, the phone can smoothly handle tasks and some multitasking. If you are someone who likes to scroll X, or watch Reels, and take some photos here and there, the phone can match your needs just fine. Though if you push it further, it does start to struggle.When it comes to games, the Note 17 Pro Max can play Call of Duty Mobile at up to 90FPS. While the device doesn’t get too warm, you do notice some frame drops after a couple of sessions. Lighter games, though, like NFS No Limits run decently. Benchmark scores for the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max. Coming to benchmarks – On Geekbench 7, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max scores 956 points in single-core, and 2,978 points in multi-core performance. On AnTuTu 12, the device managed to get just over 1 million points.Redmi Note 17 Pro Max battery lifeThere is one area where the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max takes a lead against the competition and that is battery life. The Note 17 Pro Max uses a massive 10,000mAh battery. The Note 17 Pro Max gets a huge battery that has a 10,000mAh capacity. While using the device as my primary, I found battery life to be quite decent. After using the Note 17 Pro Max for a whole day, I would still have about 40 to 50 per cent left by bedtime. This meant that I never really had to charge my phone overnight. On most occasions, the phone would last me over one and a half days on a single charge – including a lot of social media, texting, streaming, and some gaming. If you are a light user, you can expect the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max to be a two-day phone. In PC Mark’s battery test, the device scores over 26 hours.In essence, you wouldn’t really need to worry about the battery icon on your phone. One time, I was able to leave my house in the evening with about 60 per cent battery left, pull off an all-nighter, and still have 30 per cent in the morning. Though other phones today also have decent batteries – usually around 8,000mAh to 9,000mAh.For charging, the Note 17 Pro Max comes with a 100W fast charger. Because of the large battery size, however, it takes just under two hours to fully charge the phone. There is also reverse charging support at 27W, allowing you to charge accessories and even your friend’s phone.Redmi Note 17 Pro Max camerasThe Note 17 Pro Max uses a 50-megapixel main sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS), paired with an 8-megapixel ultrawide. This is essentially the same setup you get on the Note 17 Pro. Speaking about the results, the cameras do get a lot right. The colours don’t feel too boosted, and the skin tones come out fine too. The photos don’t look overexposed either. At nighttime, you do get some noise in the shots though. The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max comes with two cameras on the back, with support of 4K video recording. In portrait mode, the edge detection works well for the most part, and the photos look appealing. But there is some beautification, which we have come to expect from Redmi devices. The ultrawide can capture some usable shots as well, but sometimes you do feel colour accuracy fall down compared to the main sensor.On the front, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max uses a 32-megapixel selfie shooter. I found that selfies can look decent. There is smoothening of the skin though, as part of the default beautification.Click on any image below to view the entire galleryIn terms of videos, the Note 17 Pro Max can record up to 4K at 30FPS on the main and front camera. The footage is quite decent and stability is not bad either. The ultrawide can shoot up to 1080p only. For context, at this price, you can get a phone like the Nothing Phone 4a Pro that gets a triple camera setup with a telephoto sensor. But the Phone 4a Pro does have a smaller battery.Redmi Note 17 Pro Max user experienceThis brings us to the user experience of the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max. The phone ships with HyperOS 3, based on Android 16. Xiaomi is promising 4 years of OS updates and 6 years of security patches. The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max gets decent software support with 6 years of security patches. HyperOS is a decent Android skin, giving you a bunch of customisation options. There’s the Themes store, and personalisation options for the always on display. You also get HyperIsland for notifications and live tracking. The Note 17 Pro Max does come with depth effects for the lockscreen – something you don’t get on the Pro. But HyperOS is starting to feel a bit dated compared to other skins such as ColorOS and even NothingOS. There is bloatware too. A phone in this segment doesn’t feel premium when it comes with over a dozen pre-installed apps. You also get the Glance lockscreen – though it is off by default.There are some nice-to-have features on the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max though. The fan favourite IR blaster is there, and you also get support for Xiaomi Offline Communication. This allows you to make calls to other Xiaomi phones nearby without needing a cellular network. There are also some AI features such as AI captions and Circle to Search.Redmi Note 17 Pro Max verdictSo now that we have covered everything about the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max, let’s come back to what we mentioned in the beginning of this review – is it worthy of the Pro Max name? The Note 17 Pro Max gets some things right for today's buyer. The Note 17 Pro Max ticks some of the right boxes. You get a decent display with good speakers that make streaming a nice experience. The battery is one of the largest that you can buy today, and the durability rating is as good as it gets. But not all is sunshine and roses.In terms of performance, the competition – including Xiaomi’s own Redmi Turbo 5 – is far ahead of the Note 17 Pro Max. And the cameras are also nothing to write home about.At Rs 49,999, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is a device that covers some important bases for today’s buyer.
