Red Dead Redemption 2 Gets Shadow Of Mordor-Style Nemesis System

Red Dead Redemption 2, Like Baldur’s Gate 3, Gets Shadow Of Mordor Nemesis System Published Oct 19, 2026, 3:32 AM EDT Sam Woods is TheGamer’s Senior Reporter. He’s been in games journalism since 2020 and has undertaken a variety of roles in that time. These have included roles such as SEO Editor, Managing Editor at DualShockers, and Global Head of Gaming, and he's also been seen on the BBC. He was promoted to the Senior Reporter position in 2025 following a series of high-quality reports and exclusives for TheGamer. Since 2020, Sam has written over 3,000 articles and specializes in telling the stories of the people behind the games. He’s interviewed the biggest game directors, some of the industry’s top talents, told the stories of how indie games came to be, and spoken to players about what really makes them tick. He’s also interviewed some of the world’s biggest musical artists to find out how the medium has inspired their work, and TV and Film actors about their roles in video game adaptations. He even hosted a PAX panel in 2021 and made a documentary in 2024 surrounding the creation of a Disney game. Alongside this, Sam focuses on breaking news. He got the scoop on Perfect Dark’s cancellation, provided context on some AI drama, and revealed that Lady Dimitrescu’s actress would love to step back into the character’s giant shoes. These articles have been picked up by the biggest gaming sites, including IGN, GameSpot, and PC Gamer. He also loves to dive into the numbers behind the games. Sam’s journey in games journalism has taken him all over the world. He’s covered Gamescom in Germany, Summer Game Fest in Los Angeles, and Tokyo Game Show in Japan, each on three occasions. He’s been learning Japanese since 2024 with the intention of identifying and translating Japanese-language news and bringing it to English-language audiences first, something he’s done countless times. Sam’s first review was 2020’s Battletoads reboot, and he’s since reviewed games in The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Pokemon franchises. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis System had the potential to reshape gaming. Giving even the weakest of enemies the ability to grow and become your rival was a stroke of genius, making Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War, near-masterpieces. Unfortunately, that system is locked behind a patent, and unless something changes, we likely won't see it used in another game until 2036, 20 years after the patent was officially filed. Our best hope is that fans worldwide dedicate time and effort to backporting a similar system into our favorite games. We saw it recently with Baldur's Gate 3, and now, Red Dead Redemption 2 is getting an official fan-made Nemesis System. Red Dead Redemption 2's Nemesis System Has Arrived What made Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis System feel so special was that every enemy felt like they had a life. They had their own personalities, likes, dislikes, and grudges, making the world feel more immersive than any other game. Red Dead Redemption 2's enRAGE mod aims to do the same. "Every NPC gets a name, a temper and a mind shaped by a life lived before you rode in. They remember what you did and will cross your path again," its description by creator Nicklovin99 reads on Nexus Mods. "Everyone you cross in the West can become your nemesis. Rob a man, beat him, insult him or shoot his horse, and he may not forget. He has a name, a temper, a family, and a life story that reaches back years before he met you, and one day he comes looking for you." Every NPC in this version of RDR2 is programmed with a temper, various traits and quirks, a life story, a trade, faith, family, and their own mind. It splits every character into one of eight factions, with a leader, three tiers of officers, and men below them. It teases, "The ambitious rise and survivors who earned it are promoted. Kill a captain and someone takes his place, maybe someone worse." It's one of the deepest, most layered mods ever created. You can permanently cripple characters, and they'll come back for you, bearing their injuries. If you kill somebody with friends, they'll hear of it, maybe grieving, maybe coming for blood. It adds wars, hideouts, routines, and funerals, but it does come with one drawback: much of it was vibe-coded using Claude. This has become a common trend in games recently: games are getting new content and decompositions are being completed at record speeds, largely thanks to vibecoding by generative AI systems like Claude. While companies like Epic Games continue to praise the tech, using it to create a new broken launcher, gamers remain highly skeptical. We're certainly seeing a rise in new and exciting content, but at an increased environmental and ethical cost.
