Rockstar delivered an open-world experience that most were happy to get lost in for hundreds of hours, and many continue to do so to this day, almost a decade on from its initial release. That said, it was originally released for the limitations of the previous generation of consoles, and that meant a significant number of compromises had to be made for a game that looked better than just about anything else out there at the time. One of the biggest of those has been locking the game to 30FPS which, although it remains fine for some, is a real dealbreaker for others in the modern era. Though PC players haven't been beholden to this at any point, console players are still out in the cold, with no sign of a new edition coming from Rockstar any time soon. Happily, one dedicated fan has just shown that improvements are absolutely possible, and all without the budget of a major AAA developer. Over on YouTube, the user Vililo shared a video showcasing Red Dead Redemption 2 running at 60 FPS on the PlayStation 5. The increased hardware capability of the PS5 means this has always been possible, but taking the steps to make it a reality is an entirely different matter as a solo developer. It has to be said that the game runs remarkably well, hitting a consistent 60 FPS in all sorts of gameplay scenarios, from intense combat to general exploration. The caveat to that is that the temperatures of both the GPU and CPU can get a little high, though no more so than when playing other graphically intensive games on the platform. That said, they had the clear intention of discovering and proving how consistent performance can be in Red Dead Redemption 2 on more recent hardware. That's something they have managed to do in spades, and it's a clear demonstration that the technical hurdles standing between console players and enjoying the game in a smooth 60 FPS at 4K aren't as tall as they once were. Equally, if they're going to make it happen officially for any game, then RDR2 would easily be one of the most exciting options. Fans have been calling on Rockstar to release a next-gen version of the game for years, though those shouts have largely fallen on deaf ears, likely because so many of the studio's resources have been dedicated to GTA VI over the last few years. Another release of the second game is also likely going to be our best way to enjoy the franchise for a while, with no sign of a third game coming down the pipeline any time soon. Former studio head Dan Houser has already made it clear that it was only ever intended to be a two-parter, so it will be interesting to see if they buck that trend to get us back in the Red Dead saddle once again.
