Recover Like Josh Allen

5 min readIN LATE 2025, quarterback Josh Allen was sacked during a game. Unbeknownst to him, he broke his foot, but even after limping into the locker room at halftime, he didn’t miss a single play and led his team to a 23-20 win. Playing hurt is standard operating procedure for Allen, who manages to keep up his competitive edge even while taking painful hits week in and week out.Following the season, he underwent surgery to repair the broken foot. “I couldn’t do much but allow myself to rest and let my body heal instead of jumping straight into weights or running,” Allen told Men’s Health about his recovery. At 30, Allen attributes that ability to honor his body’s need to recover for keeping him in the game. “I think that’s allowed me to stay as healthy as I have been over my career,” he says.Whether in season or off, recovery is just as central to Allen’s regimen as training. It allows for physical and psychological breaks. Off season, golf is one way he hits the mental reset button. “I walk the 18, so there’s some sort of movement but it’s not high endurance,” he explains. “I also like to go out in nature, put the phone away for a few hours, and spend good time with friends, family, and my wife to get away and feel like I’m immersed in something else. [During this time] nothing else really matters.”“Therabody products are designed...so anyone can integrate them into their life and meet specific needs.”Swimming is another modality Allen promotes. “I highly advocate getting in the pool and swimming laps,” he says. “I think it’s able to train muscles that maybe the weight room can’t. There’s a lot of resistance, it’s cardio, and it doesn’t take a toll on your joints.”Therabody products are also key to his recovery both in and out of season. Allen, who is an official Therabody athlete, performance advisor, and investor, avails himself of all features that the Therabody line provides—percussive therapy, heat therapy, infrared LED, and pneumatic compression.“Therabody products are designed to be versatile so an elite athlete like Josh can show up and use them for training, warm-up, and recovery. They’re also designed so anyone can integrate them into their life and meet specific needs,” says Tim Roberts, Therabody’s chief science officer. He explains that Therabody products meet medical device criteria and go through peer-reviewed scientific studies, the gold standard for evaluation. “Josh is not only a leader on the field; he’s a leader off the field, and he has to show up not only for his team on Sundays, but he also needs to show up every day in the weight room,” Roberts says. Here’s how Therabody products help Allen recover so he can be his best on and off the field. For Percussive Therapy: Theragun TherabodyQuarterback Josh Allen uses the Theragun PRO Plus before every workout.THERAGUN PRO PLUS is a multi-use handheld device with a motor-driven arm that delivers rapid, targeted pulses of heat and pressure to the muscle tissue. These rhythmic pulses, known as percussive therapy, increase circulation with the help of LED light therapy. This enhanced blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles. It also helps release tight fascia with gentle movement, which helps improve flexibility and increase ease of movement. The rapid percussion also stimulates the nervous system by activating sensory receptors in the muscles that signal the brain to relax the area, which reduces tension and improves range of motion. And like traditional massage, it can prompt the body to release endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. How Allen Uses It: “I use my Theragun every single day as a warm-up so I can start throwing right away,” Allen says. “I use the gun on my rotator cuff, my pec, my biceps, my triceps, and my traps, and it just gets things moving and firing in the right direction.” He also uses it for recovery after particularly rough games. “Sometimes you wake up and something just doesn’t feel right,” he says. “Whether it’s my foot, my ankle, my calf, my back, it’s like, let me get my gun. I work with it for the next 15 minutes and then I don’t have to think about it the rest of the day.”TherabodyAllen uses the more portable Theragun Mini Plus on the field and when traveling.Allen is so committed to his Theragun PRO Plus use that he helped Therabody develop the Theragun Mini Plus—to deliver the same benefits in a portable form. Easy to slip into a locker for pre-gym warm-ups, a backpack, or a carry-on, this compact TSA-approved device combines percussive massage with heat therapy to deliver benefits three times faster than percussive massage alone. The Mini Plus is the only heated, travel-sized massage gun to activate muscles, ease soreness, and speed up recovery. Allen uses it for throwing arm maintenance on the shoulder, elbow, and forearm between sets and drills, to keep muscles and joints healthy and reduce injury risk from the high-volume load his arm takes.“When I’m traveling, I love the Mini Plus,” he says. “It gives my body and muscles relief, like I’m getting a massage, but on-the-go. It also helps me manage some of the negative effects of flying. The added benefit of heat really helps with blood flow and stiffness.”For Compression Therapy: JetBoots PRO PlusTherabodyTherabody JetBoots PRO Plus help Allen recovery faster through pneumatic compression.JETBOOTS PRO PLUS are wireless garment-like leg boots that combine pneumatic compression and vibration with infrared LED light therapy for faster, more effective lower body recovery. The boots continually inflate and deflate around the legs, moving waste away from the tissue while sending fresh oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood back into the muscles. They also increase the feeling of relaxation after use, which can help relieve fatigue and joint pain. With eight preset treatments designed by leading sports scientists, JetBoots PRO Plus use FastFlush Technology, which delivers just the right amount of pressure for your leg size to reduce swelling and fluid build-up. “The JetBoots basically accelerate the body’s natural recovery process so you can perform better sooner,” Roberts explains. How Allen Uses Them: During football season, Allen’s schedule changes from week to week, sometimes with fewer days between games, which shortens recovery and leaves him more depleted. “Sometimes you’re just feeling more sore than typical, and that’s when you can hone in on the recovery aspect with the boots and try to use them as much as possible leading up to the next game,” he says.Whether Allen is practicing with the team, lifting, or sprinting, Therabody products enhance his performance. Beyond that, he takes a holistic approach. “When it comes to training and recovery, eating well and getting a good night’s sleep are key,” Allen says. “In the perfect world, you start with a great night’s sleep. You wake up and fuel your body with good nutrition, you get properly warmed up to work at your greatest potential, and then make sure you get the recovery you need, whether that’s with the Theragun PRO Plus or JetBoots PRO Plus. Then, put more good quality nutrition into your body, get a good night’s sleep, and repeat the cycle over and over again.”Josh Allen’s Therabody Recovery ToolsTheragun PRO PlusTheragun Mini PlusJetBoots PRO Plus
