The Red Devils made the headlines for all the wrong reasons as they suffered their first defeat to the Tigers in Prem history. United had won eight of the previous ten clashes with Hull, only drawing two of those. You have to go back to November 1974 for the last time Hull beat a Man United team, which came in the second tier. It is also the first time in United’s history they have lost to a newly-promoted side on the opening day. They previously secured ten wins out of 13 against teams that had just come up. Overall, United had been on an unbeaten streak of 25 games against newly-promoted teams, including 22 wins and three draws. And for manager Sergej Jakirovic, he became the first Bosnian manager to win a Premier League game on a day for the history books. Despite a woeful first outing for United, boss Carrick said there was no need for panic. He said: “Listen, we’re bitterly disappointed with the result today but it won’t knock us. “Of course, there’s things to improve on. That’s one of them today, it’s pretty obvious to say, but, in general, we’ve been pretty good so, again, one game doesn’t change the whole direction of everything. “We know that but we’ve still got to be aware of what we need to get better at. “It’s one game. It’s the first game of the season so it’s disappointing enough and it hurts, of course it does. “But it’s one game, it doesn’t change the whole course of the direction the team or the football club is going in. We’ll stay calm, stay in the bubble and focus on next week.” United will have a chance to bounce back with a home game against another newly-promoted side in Ipswich Town at Old Trafford next Sunday.
