Recasting The Star Wars Prequels For 2026

Published Oct 22, 2026, 3:55 PM EDT George is a film critic and journalist with over nine years of experience in the entertainment industry. Beginning as the Co-Creator and Co-Editor of Star Wars Holocron, the most followed Star Wars fan account on Twitter/X, George went on to develop The HoloFiles, a movie and television-focused website with his brother and writing partner Josh. A member of the Hollywood Creative Alliance, Chicago Indie Critics, Online Film and Television Association, and the Internet Film Critic Society, George has covered major industry events as credentialed media, including D23, CinemaCon, SXSW, Fantastic Fest, Star Wars Celebration, Tribeca Festival, and more. He also regularly writes reviews and contributes articles to ScreenAnarchy, BRWC, Film Obsessive, TV Obsessive, and Under the Radar. George's work has been featured in various esteemed publications, including the BBC, Associated Press, Forbes, and The New York Times. Despite receiving mixed reviews upon their initial release, George Lucas’ Star Wars prequel trilogy has undergone a whirlwind of revisionism. Recent years have seen the kids who grew up watching Episodes I-III become adults and proudly proclaim their love for movies they deem to have ambitious scope, groundbreaking visuals, deep political lore, complex world-building, and emotional tragedy underneath it all. It is difficult to conceive of what the Star Wars prequels would look like had they been made in 2026, rather than 1999-2005. Ewan McGregor has become synonymous with the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, so much so that many view his take as the definitive portrayal of the character over Sir Alec Guinness. The same can be said for Hayden Christensen, who overcame initial ridicule in the early 2000s to become arguably the face of the entire franchise in 2026. It's worth wonderign what the cast of the prequels would like had they been made by George Lucas today in 2026. Picking actors to play the parts of Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala, and Anakin Skywalker would have posed interesting challenges, but there are certainly some talented actors out there who could take on these roles. 9 Qui-Gon Jinn - Keanu Reeves When one thinks of the attributes that define Qui-Gon Jinn and Liam Neeson’s performance as the Jedi Master, the words wise, warm, and badass come to mind. These same words come to mind when thinking of Keanu Reeves, an actor who has circled Star Wars projects but has yet to make his debut in a galaxy far, far away. Qui-Gon Jinn is meant to represent everything right about a Jedi Order slowly losing its grasp on the core principles of being a Jedi. He’s compassionate, intuitive, willing to challenge dogma, and focused on the present, rather than the past. In one way or another, these all seem to be qualities that map onto the public persona of Keanu Reeves, a man frequently described as wholesome, mindful, and grounded. 8 Obi-Wan Kenobi - Joseph Quinn Recasting Ewan McGregor and finding a different successor to original Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Alec Guiness is no short order, but one that an actor of Joseph Quinn’s caliber could take in his stride. The English actor burst on the scene with his star-making turn as Eddie in Stranger Things Season 5, before going on to impress in the likes of A Quiet Place: Day One, Warfare, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Across these projects (and more), Quinn brings an emotional vulnerability and quiet intensity to his characters. Quinn could play the younger version of Obi-Wan with sincerity and youthfulness, while also playing the older version of Obi-Wan with the maturity and love of an older brother, not unlike the role his Eddie Munson plays to Dustin Henderson in Stranger Things. 7 Padmé Amidala - Inde Navarette No actor in 2026 has been more discussed than Inde Navarette. The breakout star from Curry Barker’s horror smash hit Obsession recently booked the role of Rogue in Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot and has quickly ascended to be among the most recognizable and in-demand actresses working today. Navarette’s performance as Nikki in Obsession showcases the incredible emotional range she is capable of. Lovely and caring one second, only to be explosive and terrifying in the next, Navarette brings undeniable passion and fluidity to the screen. This means she is more than capable of oscillating between the regal Queen of Naboo and the more vulnerable Padmé behind closed doors. She also packs an alluring quality, the same alluring quality that atrracts Bear in Obsession and that draws Anakin to Padmé. 6 Anakin Skywalker - Noah Jupe Noah Jupe is not currently a household name, but it feels like only a matter of time until he is. As a child actor, Jupe gained recognition for his roles in The Night Manager and A Quiet Place, before impressing in The Carpenter’s Son and a new stage production of Romeo and Juliet in adulthood. Jupe possesses the youthfulness of a young Anakin in The Phantom Menace, albeit not as young as Jake Lloyd was, and the maturity of an older Anakin in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Casting the same, more age-appropriate actor as Anakin across all three films would also make the story of the prequels flow more smoothly. Jupe brings an intensity and soul to all of his characters, perfect for the role of Anakin Skywalker, while his more recent roles in The Carpenter’s Son and The Death of Robin Hood prove that he can seamlessly transition to darker material. 5 Palpatine - Ralph Fiennes Ralph Fiennes has already played Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise, and it's not hard to imagine him taking a similarly huge role in another massive franchise. Across his illustrious career, Fiennes has played warm, earnest mentors and menacing, unsettling antagonists. Playing the dual role of Sheev Palpatine and Darth Sidious would require him to tap into both sensibilities, something he seems exceedingly capable of. 4 Darth Maul - Sam Witwer via MovieStillsDB Sam Witwer has made the role of Darth Maul his own in recent years, having most recently voiced the character in the critically acclaimed Maul - Shadow Lord. Witwer has yet to play Maul in live-action, although he did wear Maul make-up behind the scenes of Maul - Shadow Lord in order to provide animators with a reference point for how his face would interact with Maul’s distinctive facial markings. An accomplished actor in front of the camera, as demonstrated in the likes of The Mist, Dexter, and Being Human, Witwer is more than capable of making the transition to live-action, which would establish further continuity between live-action and animated Star Wars projects. 3 Stephen James - Mace Windu Stephan James has impressed in a variety of roles across his career, but his recent turn as Carl Weathers in I Play Rocky shows what kind of screen presence he can be in a big film. James is known for his quiet intensity, an attribute absolutely necessary to step into Samuel L. Jackson’s shoes and take on the role of Mace Windu. 2 Count Dooku - Charles Dance George Lucas cast a regal legend of cinema in the role of Count Dooku in the prequels, so it would only be appropriate that another regal legend of cinema would be cast in the role in 2026. Sir Christopher Lee, an icon of Hammer Productions and The Lord of the Rings franchise, brought a level of prestige and gravitas to Star Wars that arguably only the likes of Sir Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing had previously achieved. Charles Dance, known for his role as Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones, brings that same degree of authority and aristocracy perfect for a new take on Count Dooku. 1 Gary Oldman - General Grievous Credit: MovieStillsDB Academy Award-winner Gary Oldman was originally cast as the voice of General Grievous in Revenge of the Sith and even recorded lines as the character, before Lucas’ failure to secure a SAG waiver for Oldman forced the actor to drop out. Although Matthew Wood subsequently gave an iconic vocal performance as the raspy general, it would certainly be interesting to see an actor of Oldman’s caliber finally get the chance to take on a role he was cast in over 20 years ago. It remains an interesting thought experiment to recast the characters of the Star Wars prequel trilogy in the modern day. While the likes of Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor have become so synonymous with their respective Jedi, looking at the breadth of talent working in the modern film industry shows that the prequels would be in more than good hands if they happened to be made today.
