Sign in to your ScreenRant account When astronaut John Crichton accidentally enters a wormhole and finds himself among the misfits on board a living spaceship with a symbiotic pilot, this would turn out to be a comparatively tame plot in TV's wildest space opera. Farscape is one of the best space shows of the past 30 years, with an action-packed storyline, characters provided by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and storylines that ranged from heartbreaking to hilarious. The visual effects might not always hold up today, but Farscape's best episodes are still considered classics for the performances of the show's cast. The series could go from bizarre to tragic and back again, often within a single episode, as the main cast had to act their way through heavy prosthetics while ensuring viewers laughed with the series rather than at it. It might be virtually impossible to imagine anyone else playing Farscape's iconic characters, but if the show was made in 2026, these actors could do them justice. Alden Ehrenreich As John Crichton Credit: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures via MovieStillsDB Alden Ehrenreich has the exact blend of charisma and depth that makes John Crichton compelling. Having already played Han Solo, Ehrenreich has proven himself able to portray someone completely out of his depth, carrying the story through charm and personality. Reinterpreting one of sci-fi's most beloved characters would be a challenge for any actor, but Ehrenreich made his Han Solo believable as the same character played by Harrison Ford, and his version of John Crichton would likely be his own version while recognizably the same character the original Farscape fans know. Crichton has been thrown into an entirely alien world, literally, yet refuses to let go of his Earth references and wisecracks, simultaneously carrying some of the most powerful storylines. Crichton's mental health unravels later in the show, and Ehrenreich's roles in both Oppenheimer and Brave New World reflect elements of the storyline, further highlighting his potential as a worthy successor to Ben Browder. Cara Gee As Aeryn Sun Image courtesy of Everett Collection Cara Gee's career-defining role as Camina Drummer in The Expanse essentially shows her playing a modern Peacekeeper, with Farscape's Aeryn Sun acting as a blueprint for some of Drummer's best storylines in the show. Aeryn is a military-trained fugitive, who begins Farscape brainwashed by propaganda before her journey to discover the truth turns her into a hero, while Drummer becomes the true hero of The Expanse after undergoing a similar personal transformation. Claudia Black's portrayal of Aeryn made both the actor and character into sci-fi icons, and it would be essential that a Farscape remake cast an actor capable of doing both Black and Aeryn justice. Gee's similarly strong look and ability to convey authority over characters physically larger than her give her the screen presence required for the role, and as a respected sci-fi actor herself, she is perfectly positioned to carry the torch. Andy Serkis As Rygel Patrick Redmond/©Angel Studios/Courtesy Everett Collection Farscape's pompous deposed ruler, Dominar Rygel XVI, is a major reason to revisit the underrated sci-fi show, and recasting him requires a voice actor capable of making the character regal, strategic, and hilarious at the same time. Andy Serkis is a perfect fit, with his groundbreaking portrayal of The Lord of the Rings' Gollum making him into one of the world's most respected voice actors, before he then played Caesar in the Planet of the Apes movies and Renoir in the multi-award-winning Expedition 33 video game. With Serkis' motion capture skills, Rygel could have a new range of movement and expression, while the actor would give him the blend of royalty and wretchedness that he needs. Rygel can command a room from a height of only a few feet tall, before pleading and complaining when cornered, but few actors have the vocal range to play both aspects of the character. Serkis has demonstrated throughout his career that he does. Doug Jones As Pilot Image via MovieStillsDB Doug Jones has played some unexpected characters, but he is best known for embodying creatures like The Faun in Pan's Labyrinth and The Asset in The Shape of Water due to his tall physique. That said, his voice acting experience and standout performance as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movie series would make him an excellent choice to play Pilot in a Farscape remake. Farscape has a 90% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Abe has a calm and wise demeanor, but he struggles with deep existential loneliness and melancholy, and Doug Jones nails this, acting his way through prosthetics to convey both gentleness and profound emotional pain. An actor playing Pilot must embody this same combination, with Pilot's symbiotic relationship with the Leviathan ship Moya being forced upon them, leaving Pilot in immense pain for much of the early seasons, while being the grounded center for communicating with the ship. Bill Skarsgård As Scorpius MovieStillsDB Farscape's main villain, Scorpius, is not only delightfully unhinged, but also multidimensional, through his ridiculous alter-ego, Harvey. Both versions of Farscape's Scorpius are played by the same actor, Wayne Pygram in the original show, who made both believable while being extremely complex. Scorpius is at war with himself and obsessed with stopping the Scarrans from conquering the galaxy, making him a formidable enemy, the occasional comic relief, and even an ally. It is hard to imagine an actor better suited to a character like this than Bill Skarsgård, who has made a career out of playing bizarre and unhinged characters in a way that allows them to be taken seriously. Bill Skarsgård's best movies and TV shows include IT, where he makes Pennywise his own, even after Tim Curry made his performance a hard act to follow, as well as Nosferatu, where he played Count Orlok, and the deeply unsettling dual character The Kid and The Angel in Castle Rock. Elizabeth Debicki As Zotoh Zhaan Image via MovieStillsDB Zotoh Zhaan, the 800-year-old plant-based lifeform and political anarchist, hides her capacity for violence under a spiritual and relentlessly calm exterior. She is the anchor and caregiver among the chaos that often takes over Moya, and her final arc is one of the most powerful in the show, as she sacrifices herself for another crew member. Elizabeth Debicki's characters often conceal deep rage and sadness under a mask of serenity, from Princess Diana in The Crown to Kat in Tenet, making her an ideal choice to play Zhaan. Not only does Debicki have experience playing characters like Zhaan, but her statuesque 6'3" height would allow the character to stand out even more, projecting the majesty required for a Delvian species. She also has experience acting her way past prosthetics, contact lenses, and heavy make-up. As Ayesha, the Golden High Priestess of the Sovereign in Guardians of the Galaxy, Debicki's makeup is essentially a golden version of Zhaan, who is covered head to toe in blue face and body paint. Ella Purnell As Chiana Chiana is Farscape's resident wild card. Having escaped a totalitarian society that lobotomizes people for nonconformist behavior, her lack of inhibition and restless energy gets her into trouble more often than not. With her crimes ranging from theft to heartbreak, sabotaging her relationship with Ka D'Argo by sleeping with his son, any actor playing Chiana must embody this chaos while also showcasing her loneliness and fear of being abandoned, keeping her likable. Chiana has a lot in common with Arcane's Jinx, who has been made unstable by the loss of her family, and whose well-meaning plans cannot help but destroy everything she values. Ella Purnell's portrayal makes Jinx tragic and sympathetic, and of all Ella Purnell's best TV characters, Jinx has the exact blend of charm and danger that Chiana needs. No stranger to playing an optimistic sci-fi character escaping a sheltered upbringing, Purnell could also bring elements of Fallout's Lucy to a Farscape reboot, giving the two warring sides of Chiana's character even more of a contrast. Nonso Anozie As Ka D'Argo Image via MovieStillsDB Luxans like Ka D'Argo come from a warrior culture prone to fits of blackout rage, but with a spiritual side that influences every aspect of their lives. D'Argo is physically imposing, starting the show as a more typical fighter, but his storyline allows him to evolve and become one of the most complex and tragic heroes of the series. At over 6'5", with a deep and resonant voice, Nonso Anozie has the same commanding presence as the character, with a significant skill that would make his interpretation extremely exciting. Anozie is a classically-trained Shakespearean actor, with the theatrical gravity required to pull off D'Argo's intense, Shakespearean outbursts without making them feel cartoonish. Farscape involves physical comedy, absurdist humor, and witty comebacks, and Anozie's roles in Artemis Fowl and Ted Lasso show that he can also pull off the humor needed alongside D'Argo's ferocity. With his proven ability to play "gentle giant" characters, playing one of Farscape's best would allow Anozie to highlight several skills at once.
