Prime Video's Reacher has become a massive success since its 2022 debut, but the show's universe is set to change for good in less than two months time. Becoming one of Prime Video's biggest hits, Reacher adapts Lee Child's bestselling novels into an exciting series that features Alan Ritchson as the titular Jack Reacher, a former Army policeman who lives his life drifting around the US rather than putting down roots. Building a loyal viewership in its first years, Reacher will be expanding its universe in just a few months, adding a second show to the franchise with spinoff Neagley. With each season of Reacher adapting a different novel from Child's series, the self-contained storytelling style is unique to the series. Neagley, which follows the story of Reacher's closest confidant Frances Neagley (Maria Sten), in a much more serialized way than the original series. While Neagley is based off of Child's character, it's also the first series in the Reacher universe not to stem from the author's written work. The new series, which launches on September 16, is an expansion of the universe, but will change the way Reacher (and any future Reacher franchise shows) reaches its audience forever. Telling an original story that takes Reacher into consideration and shifts gears with a whole new character, story, and world, Neagley is taking a big swing for the Prime Video franchise. With so much riding on the show, Neagley's release is an important step forward for Reacher as a whole. Neagley's Spinoff Is A Major Deviation From Lee Child's Books With a departure from the source material, Neagley is a huge deviation from the formula that's made Reacher a global streaming success. According to Prime Video, the spinoff series will follow Neagley as a private investigator in Chicago, working to find more information about a close friend's death after the accidental nature of their passing seems suspicious. Determined to uncover the truth behind what's happened, the spinoff will see Neagley using her own investigation skills on top of what she's learned in the military, as well as what she's ascertained from working with Reacher during her time on the show. Neagley will also be a huge separation from the original series in the way it's developed. Working as an original story rather than a story that's adapted from a source for television, the new series is starting a major evolution for the franchise as a whole. Neagley already occupies a much larger role than she does in the Reacher novels, as expanding the role helped give Reacher someone to talk to rather than having a running internal monologue. The novels can tell their stories without Neagley, but Reacher can't. Now, Neagley may switch things up for the franchise even further. Neagley's Success Would Be Huge For Reacher's Franchise Future Although Reacher is going to continue to be a success with or without Neagley becoming a success of its own, seeing the spinoff series do well would be huge for the franchise's future. Neagley is such a major departure for the story as a whole that, if it works well, Reacher may eventually find itself taking notes. While there are still many novels for Reacher to adapt as the show continues, the series may eventually find itself running out of source material or interested in taking the story in a different direction entirely. Expanding the series beyond the novels could be a game changer for Reacher, especially in the way that it connects to its audience. If the show is able to bridge the gap between the book version of the series and a made-for-TV version, it could theoretically last forever. Neagley being able to hold its own without source material to take from, and instead making its own sense of magic, could provide the winning formula to ensure that Reacher always has a leg to stand on, too. While the outcome's uncertain, Neagley could bring the Reacher universe into its next era.
