Justice Secretary Alex Norris told The Sun on Sunday more criminals than ever will be placed under “constant surveillance”. He added: “Dangerous offenders should be under no illusion – if they break the rules we will know about it and put them behind bars. “And we’re backing our probation officers with new tech to act fast when offenders step out of line. “That means tough punishment in the community, victims put front and centre and a probation service focused on what matters most – keeping the public safe.” Senior Probation Officer Amy Hughes said it will make their day-to-day job simpler. “This is a real game changer for us,” she added. “Previously, if we needed to check where someone had been, getting that information could take time. Now we can get a much clearer picture of their movements quickly and easily.” Most read in The Sun The changes will help police and probation to act quicker if criminals breach their licence conditions. Future plans will see offenders sent push notifications as they approach the boundary of an exclusion zone – warning them to turn back. It comes after Prime Minister Andy Burnham excluded rapists, serious child sex offenders and groomers from the controversial early release scheme. However, ministers are still set to release 5,000 offenders from October amid the overcrowding crisis. It comes after a petition to stop the early release of PC Andrew Harper’s killers reached more than one million signatures. Comment now
