Actor Vinayakan’s Varman may have met his end at the hands of Superstar Rajinikanth’s Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer, but the gangster’s death was only the beginning of a much bigger problem. Varman’s connections hinted at a criminal network that extended beyond his idol-smuggling operation, giving director Nelson Dilipkumar room to introduce a new set of villains in Jailer 2.The sequel expands its criminal universe with Suraj Venjaramoodu’s Dileep and the Kalpak family, led by SJ Suryah’s Bodhi Kalpak and Vidya Balan's Kantha Kalpak. With Mithun Chakraborty, Jatin Sarna and Hakim Shahjahan joining the villain camp, there is no shortage of antagonists.Bodhi, Kantha and Dileep receive substantial arcs, while the remaining members of the Kalpak family have considerably less to do. The question is whether this expanded criminal universe makes Tiger’s latest battle more dangerous or simply gives him more people to take down.Varman’s death leaves unfinished businessOne reason Varman became such a memorable antagonist in the first film was his unpredictable behaviour. His eccentricity, temper and unsettling sense of humour made him a formidable opponent for Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. His death, following a deeply personal conflict involving Tiger’s son Arjun (Vasanth Ravi), also left room for the story to explore the criminal connections he had built. Jailer 2 uses that fallout to set its events in motion. Varman’s close friend Dileep sets out to find the man responsible, initially unaware that Tiger killed him. His search eventually draws him towards the retired jailer and his family.Rather than recreate Varman as the central threat, Nelson uses his death to connect the two films and widen the conflict. Tiger is no longer dealing with one gangster and his immediate circle, but a larger network with its own power structures.Suraj Venjaramoodu’s Dileep: A different kind of menace Suraj Venjaramoodu plays Dileep, a gangster whose desire to avenge Varman gives him a clear motivation. Where Varman thrived on chaotic energy, Dileep brings a different temperament, with Suraj balancing eccentricity and dark humour with the threat of violence.Dileep is more than a link between the two films. His personal connection to Varman gives the conflict an emotional starting point, while his place in the criminal network leads Tiger towards the Kalpak family. His pursuit of Varman’s killer gives the sequel a direct conflict before the story opens up into a larger battle.Introducing Suraj Venjaramoodu as Dileep from the world of #Jailer2 @rajinikanth @Nelsondilpkumar @anirudhofficial #SurajVenjaramoodu @vijaykartikdop @Nirmalcuts @ChethanDsouza @AlwaysJani @KiranDrk #PallaviSingh @valentino_suren @Alagiakoothan #SantoshRaju @kabilanchelliah @kuchirayar73 @RIAZtheboss #Jailer2FromOct15— Sun Pictures (@sunpictures) September 18, 2026Enter the Kalpak familyAt the centre of the wider criminal operation is the Kalpak family, which runs a larger idol-smuggling syndicate. Bodhi is joined by his father, Chakri Kalpak (Mithun Chakraborty), and siblings Kantha (Vidya Balan), Dev (Jatin Sarna) and Sharva (Hakim Shahjahan). The family-run empire offers the sequel a broader canvas, with competing interests and a hierarchy that extends beyond a single gangster and his henchmen. However, the film does not give every member equal narrative importance. Bodhi and Kantha emerge as significant players, while Chakri, Dev and Sharva remain largely on the periphery.SJ Suryah’s Bodhi: The face of the new threatSJ Suryah’s Bodhi is one of the sequel’s principal antagonists. Suryah’s flair for larger-than-life characters gives him a distinct screen presence, while Bodhi’s position within the Kalpak family makes him central to the confrontation with Tiger. In a film crowded with villains, Bodhi stands out because he has a defined place in the central conflict rather than merely adding to the criminal empire’s numbers. His role gives the sequel a new antagonist around whom its larger confrontation can take shape. Kantha: A formidable villain, but not beyond misogynyVidya Balan’s Kantha is another consequential antagonist. As a powerful member of the Kalpak family, she occupies a position of authority in a criminal world dominated by men. Yet Tiger’s misogynistic remarks directed at her complicate that portrayal and undercut the authority she commands.Kantha gets enough narrative weight to stand alongside Bodhi and Dileep as one of the sequel’s more substantial villains. However, the remarks aimed at her have also drawn criticism from critics and audiences alike. Her character presents a contradiction: the film gives her the power to operate within the criminal hierarchy, yet its treatment of her raises questions about how that authority is framed. That tension makes Kantha more interesting to examine than several of the other antagonists, whose roles never develop beyond their place in the family.More villains, less depthDespite its expanded ensemble, Jailer 2 concentrates its strongest villain arcs in Bodhi, Kantha and Dileep. Chakri and the other siblings help establish the scale of the Kalpak family’s operation, but the film gives them little individual motivation or development to make them equally memorable. The result is a criminal empire that looks formidable on paper but distributes its dramatic weight unevenly. Adding more antagonists raises the apparent stakes, but without distinct motivations and meaningful development, several of them remain names and faces in a larger syndicate. The challenge for Jailer 2 was to find a new threat capable of following Varman, whose distinctive character and Vinayakan’s performance left a strong impression in the first film. Nelson responds by widening the battlefield, shifting the focus from one gangster’s operation to an extensive criminal network. The expansion has its strengths. Dileep connects the sequel to Varman’s death, Bodhi drives the larger confrontation, and Kantha adds another dimension to the Kalpak family. These three characters provide the film with its most substantial villain arcs.Ultimately, Jailer 2 has more villains than its predecessor, but its dramatic strength rests on a smaller group. Varman’s death opens the door to a bigger criminal universe; Bodhi, Kantha and Dileep make that universe matter. The others add to its scale without leaving the same impression.- Ends
