Rajinikanth reveals why he said yes to Jailer 2 after rejecting Baasha 2 and Petta 2

Rajinikanth isn't someone who gets excited about sequels. He turned down ideas for Baasha 2 and Petta 2, but Nelson Dilipkumar's Jailer left him with a question he couldn't ignore: how could Tiger Muthuvel Pandian walk away when the first film had set up a much bigger fight? At the pre-release event of Jailer 2, the superstar explained why he agreed to return for the sequel. It wasn't simply the success of the 2023 film. He felt its story had already laid the groundwork for another chapter, with enough unanswered questions and dangerous players waiting in the wings.“I am generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part and add a little extra flavour and turn it into another film,” Rajinikanth said.He recalled being approached for Baasha 2 and a proposal for Petta 2 from Karthik Subbaraj, which would have expanded Vijay Sethupathi's character. Neither idea appealed to him. Why Jailer 2 felt different? What changed his mind was watching Jailer again after its OTT release. Rajinikanth pointed to the film's ending, when Varma warns that a much bigger network stands behind him and that his men won't let the Jailer go unchallenged."After Jailer was released on OTT, I watched the movie again. Towards the end, when I was about to end Varma’s character, he says there’s a bigger network and that they wouldn’t spare him either. So, the story was perfect for a sequel," he said." Nelson, he said, had quietly planted clues about Varma's reach throughout the film. His international business connections were powerful enough to frighten even the police. And then there were the three containers worth thousands of crores that the Jailer had in his possession. Surely, the gang wouldn't simply let that go.“So, the story setup is perfect,” Rajinikanth said, adding that the Jailer also has powerful criminals and dons in Nagpur jail backing him. For the actor, these details gave the sequel a natural starting point rather than making it feel like an extension created just to cash in on the first film's success.“That’s why I called Nelson,” he said. What's next for Tiger Muthuvel Pandian?Written and directed by Nelson, Jailer 2 is produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner and is set to release in theatres on October 15. Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, alongside Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik. The sequel also features new cast members SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff are also expected to return in cameos. The trailer has fuelled speculation about another possible appearance, with fans wondering whether Hrithik Roshan could be involved after the makers teased a mystery cameo through a silhouette. However, there's been no official confirmation.Watch the trailer here: For now, Rajinikanth's explanation offers a clear hint at what drew him back: Jailer had already built a world too big to end with one film. And with Varma's network still looming, Tiger Muthuvel Pandian has unfinished business.- Ends
