Rahul Gandhi education: From St Stephen's dropout to an MPhil at Cambridge

Rahul Gandhi has been raising the issues faced by lakhs of students in Parliament. But before entering politics, he too was a student like millions of others. His educational journey was marked by several disruptions, from the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to leaving his undergraduate course at St. Stephen's College and later moving to Harvard University.Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who has been raising the issue of the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak both inside and outside Parliament, has once again drawn public attention. He spent his early years in the national capital, where the Gandhi family remained at the centre of Indian politics. He began his schooling at St. Columba’s School in New Delhi. In 1981, he joined The Doon School, Dehradun, where he studied until 1983. During his time at the boarding school, his classmates included Jyotiraditya Scindia and Jitin Prasada, both of whom later entered politics.However, following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, security concerns for the Gandhi family increased significantly. Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were withdrawn from regular schooling and continued their education through home tutoring under the supervision of teachers. According to journalist Rasheed Kidwai, writing in an earlier India Today article, Rahul Gandhi secured 61 per cent marks in his CBSE examination. The report also noted that he received admission to St. Stephen’s College under the sports quota.FROM ST STEPHEN'S TO HARVARDAfter completing school, Rahul Gandhi enrolled in St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, where he studied History during the 1989–90 academic session.However, he left the course after about a year and moved to Harvard University in the United States to continue his undergraduate studies.His stay at Harvard was also cut short due to heightened security concerns following the assassination of his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, in May 1991.SHIFT TO ROLLINS COLLEGEFollowing the increased threat perception to the Gandhi family, Rahul Gandhi transferred to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, where he completed his undergraduate education. He completed the degree in 1995.His academic journey across India, the United States and the United Kingdom gave him exposure to different educational systems before he entered professional life.After finishing his higher education, Rahul Gandhi worked for nearly three years at Monitor Group, a global management consulting firm founded by Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter, in London.In 2002, he returned to India and co-founded Backops Services Private Ltd, a technology outsourcing and consultancy company based in Mumbai, where he served as one of its directors before entering active politics.Rahul Gandhi’s educational journey was unlike that of most students.
