Nearly 35 years after bursting on the scene with Reservoir Dogs, Quentin Tarantino remains one of the most acclaimed and singularly talented modern filmmakers. The mastermind behind classics such as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Inglorious Basterds has not helmed a feature film for seven years but returns this month for a major release that ranks among 2026’s most talked about movies. In 2019, Tarantino wrote and directed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a witty, intentionally meandering period piece about 1960s Hollywood, told through the perspective of a fading, alcoholic actor and his effortlessly cool stuntman across three fateful days. In addition to grossing over $400 million at the global box office, the film was lauded for its punchy dialogue, love letter to ‘60s L.A., and duo of stellar lead performances, in particular that of Brad Pitt, whose turn as Cliff Booth earned him an Academy Award. After seven years, Tarantino follows Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with a grand return to cinema -- in the biggest premium format and on the biggest streaming service. Tarantino Returns To Cliff Booth's Story - But He Isn't Directing Quentin Tarantino’s eagerly anticipated return to movies comes in the form of The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that positions Pitt’s former stuntman in the lead role. Interestingly, Tarantino opted against directing the film as he continues to adhere to a self-imposed limit of 10 feature-length directorial films. As he did not want his final project to be a sequel or a retread of covered ground, Tarantino passed the torch to another acclaimed filmmaker. However, he did write the screenplay for the movie. Stepping into Tarantino’s lofty shoes is David Fincher, who previously collaborated with Brad Pitt on Seven, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Fincher has had a long relationship with Netflix dating back to House of Cards and continuing with Mindhunter and Mank, making him a perfect choice to spearhead this next chapter in Cliff Booth’s story. What We Know About The Further Mis-Adventures Of Cliff Booth The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth takes place in 1977, roughly eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and in the seminal year that saw George Lucas bring the original Star Wars to theaters. The film picks up with Pitt’s Cliff Booth having transitioned away from full-time stunt work, now taking on odd jobs as a bartender and a cinema projectionist. In the shadows, however, he works as a studio fixer, handling murder, blackmail, extortion, and all manner of dirty secrets for the movers and shakers in Hollywood. A surprise screening of the first 17 minutes of the film at AFI Fest revealed that Cliff gave up being Rick Dalton’s stuntman due to their growing physical dissimilarities. In more blunt terms, Cliff candidly says in the footage, “Rick got too fat for me to double him anymore.” It is currently unclear if Leonardo DiCaprio will reprise his role as Rick Dalton in the sequel. Despite DiCaprio’s (presumed) absence, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth bolsters an ensemble cast to back Pitt up. Timothy Olyphant will reprise his role as Lancer star James Stacy in the film, while no other cast members from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are confirmed to appear. Peter Weller, known for his role in RoboCop, will play Cliff’s father in the film. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play Roderick ‘Hot Rod’ Harrison, a Blaxploitation star who Pitt’s character crosses paths with. Rounding out the principal members of the cast are Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis, and Karren Karagulian. Plot details are largely under wraps for the film as promotional material has primarily focused on setting the atmosphere for the story. On December 8, 2026, Tarantino will publish a companion novel titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth. How To Get IMAX Tickets For The Further Mis-Adventures Of Cliff Booth The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will have a two-week limited IMAX theatrical run in select theaters on November 25, 2026. Tickets can be purchased here. The film will make its global streaming debut on Netflix on December 23, 2026.
