The agreement will see Woodside supply up to three million tonnes of LNG annually from its Louisiana project, which is expected to begin production in 2029. QatarEnergy has signed a 20-year agreement to purchase up to three million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from Australian energy company Woodside’s project in the United States.Announced by Woodside on Thursday, the agreement covers supplies from its Louisiana LNG project, which is under construction near Lake Charles, Louisiana. The project is expected to begin production in 2029. Its first phase will comprise three production units, known as trains, with a combined capacity of 16.5 million tonnes of LNG annually.Under the agreement, deliveries to QatarEnergy will begin when the project’s second train becomes operational, before increasing to three million tonnes annually once the third train starts production. The LNG will be supplied on a free-on-board (FOB) basis. This means Woodside will be responsible for loading the LNG onto vessels at the export terminal, while QatarEnergy will take responsibility for shipping it from there. Woodside CEO and Managing Director Liz Westcott described the agreement as a major step towards securing long-term customers for the Louisiana project. “This landmark agreement brings together Woodside’s competitive U.S. LNG project with QatarEnergy as a customer, one of the world’s leading energy companies,” Westcott said. QatarEnergy strengthens its LNG supply portfolio The agreement follows two long-term deals QatarEnergy signed with US energy company Cheniere on 22 October to purchase up to four million tonnes of LNG annually. The agreements cover supplies from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass facility in Louisiana and Corpus Christi facility in Texas. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2031 and continue through 2054.Together, the agreements add to QatarEnergy’s long-term LNG supply arrangements with US producers, with the Woodside deal set to provide supplies from a project expected to begin production in 2029.
