Qatar welcomes UK’s trade ban on goods from Israeli settlements

It was announced by UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband at the House of Commons.“I can announce today that we will introduce an import ban on goods from illegal settlements in the occupied territories,” said Miliband. Miliband said the UK would take action against specific companies and individuals providing construction, infrastructure, financing or real estate services for settlement expansion. He described the measures as part of a “broad international coalition” in response to settler violence in the occupied Palestinian territories and as part of the UK’s efforts to support a two-state solution.The UK joined the foreign ministers of Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden in a joint statement on Tuesday, confirming their intention to introduce or support national and/or European restrictions on trade in goods from settlements.The countries said they intend to introduce or support restrictions on trade in goods from settlements considered illegal under international law.“In this regard, the UK, France and Canada welcome the important action already taken by Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium and will bring forward national measures to ban trade in settlement goods.” said the statement.The ministers said Israel’s actions in the West Bank are undermining the possibility of a two-state solution, citing unprecedented settler violence and settlement expansion.They called for the two-state solution to be protected, opposed the annexation of Palestinian land and forcible displacement, and urged Israel to halt settlement expansion.Following the UK’s announcement and the joint statement by the 12 countries, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Tuesday Israel would consider countermeasures against other countries that take action against it.“But we will also take countermeasures, at our discretion, against other countries that act or will act against Israel. The message to every government that harms us is clear: whoever acts against Israel, Israel will act against them.” said Saar.Some of the measures include closing the British Consulate in Jerusalem and denying entry to 12 British elected officials and other British nationals.In a statement welcoming the UK’s measures on Tuesday, Qatar expressed hope that more countries would take similar steps of a trade ban on goods imported from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. It urged the international community to fulfil its legal and moral responsibilities by compelling Israel to halt settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories and respect international law and international legitimacy resolutions.
