Araghchi expressed his appreciation for Qatar’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives and efforts to reduce escalation and support open channels of communication.The meeting marks the Qatari top diplomat’s first visit to Iran since the U.S.-Iran war erupted on February 28.While a memorandum of understanding was signed in June through Qatari and Pakistani mediation, its implementation fell apart over disagreements over control of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of blockades.The waterway remains a focal point of regional tensions, with Iran and Oman actively negotiating a temporary transit route.The discussions over joint mine-clearing come amid conflicting reports on the strait’s safety.U.S. President Donald Trump recently stated on social media that a ceasefire was imminent, while his administration seeks to keep petroleum flowing through the strait.However, Iranian officials and international allies maintain that drifting mines remain a significant threat to navigation.Ahead of the Thursday meeting, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari reiterated the need to restore the strait’s freedom of navigation to its pre-February 28 status quo to ensure unimpeded global maritime traffic.Friday, August 28, will mark exactly six months since the U.S. launched its war on Iran.
