Qatar Philharmonic celebrates Mexican heritage with ‘Sounds of Mexico’ concert

Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra celebrated Mexico’s musical heritage with its ‘Sounds of Mexico’ concert as part of the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture.The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra celebrated Mexico’s rich musical heritage with a special concert in Doha as part of the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture.Titled “Sounds of Mexico”, the concert was held at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) and marked the first of two musical performances being organised as part of this year’s cultural exchange programme.The performance, which coincided with celebrations marking Mexican Independence Day, was led by renowned Mexican conductor Enrique Arturo Diemecke and introduced audiences to some of Mexico’s best-known composers and orchestral traditions.The programme featured Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2, Carlos Chávez’s Chacona in E Minor, Blas Galindo’s Sones de Mariachi and Silvestre Revueltas’ Redes Suite, Part II.The evening concluded with José Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango, inspired by traditional music from Mexico’s Huasteca region and widely regarded as one of the country’s most recognisable expressions of musical identity.The concert also offered members of Qatar’s Mexican community an opportunity to celebrate their musical heritage away from home.Diemecke said he was pleased to return to Qatar and share Mexican music with audiences in Doha, describing the programme as one filled with vitality, dance, drama and reflections of the country’s people and traditions.The appearance marked Diemecke’s return to Qatar following his collaboration with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra during the Qatar, Argentina and Chile 2025 Year of Culture.Kurt Meister, Executive Director of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, said its partnership with the Years of Culture initiative allows audiences in Qatar to discover a broader range of music and explore the diversity of the global orchestral repertoire.The Years of Culture initiative promotes cultural exchange through arts, heritage, education, sport and other fields, with the 2026 edition bringing together Qatar, Canada and Mexico.A second concert, “Sounds of Canada”, is scheduled to take place at QNCC on November 7 under conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe.
