Python found in waste bundle at Koyilandy material collection facility; probe launched

The Koyilandy municipal authorities have launched an investigation into the incident in which a rescued python was recently found in a sack at a material collection facility (MCF) at Muthambi in Kozhikode.Local body members from the area said it was a narrow escape for the Haritha Karma Sena volunteers who opened the sack last week, assuming that it was a bundle of segregated plastic waste for treatment. The issue came to light when the volunteers revealed the incident during a ward-level meeting, they said. The volunteers, who claimed they narrowly escaped being bitten by the snake, urged the municipal authorities to identify those responsible and issue strict public instructions to prevent such incidents. They described the reckless act as deeply shocking and distressing.Municipal chairman U.K. Chandran on Friday (July 24) said a comprehensive investigation was under way into the incident. “It happened in an area where there were no CCTV cameras. We have taken up the issue seriously,” he added. Published - July 24, 2026 07:48 pm IST
