Punter favourite and beloved grey Eldorado Allen tragically dies aged 12 after suffering fall on final run at Aintree

The superstar chaser who loved running at Cheltenham was listed as deceased aged 12 on the BHA site as of last Saturday. Beloved grey Eldorado Allen, a firm punter favourite, has sadly died aged 12 – his death being listed four months after he fell in the Topham Chase at Aintree’s Grand National meeting Credit: Getty A winner of six of his 42 career runs, Eldorado Allen, who was most recently trained by Joe Tizzard, fell at the Canal Turn in last April’s Topham Chase over the National course. He had been enjoying a fine season before that, winning a veterans’ chase at the home of jumps in November before recording form figures of 3-4-4 on his next three runs. But that Aintree outing, where he was sent off 66-1 under Brendan Powell, was sadly to prove his last. Eldorado Allen – who finished second to Shishkin in the 2021 Arkle – was a Graded performer in his pomp. He won the 2021 Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter – when trained by Joe’s dad Colin – before landing the Denman Chase at Newbury in February of that same season, seeing off Rich Ricci’s Royale Pagaille. Sadly that owner suffered his own loss recently with the passing of Willie Mullins’ Sharjah. Eldorado Allen battled the likes of Protektorat and Bravemansgame, finishing second behind both in 2022 before a seventh place in the 2023 Gold Cup, won by Mullins’ Galopin Des Champs. After his most recent and final win, trainer Tizzard explained how the punter star ‘loved’ Cheltenham, saying: “We’ve had him since he was a four-year-old and his longevity is amazing. Most read in Horse Racing “He is the first horse you see when you come in the yard – he’s in Cue Card’s old box and his head is over the door all day.” Eldorado Allen, a model of consistency, finished in the places a remarkable 27 times and won just shy of £400,000 in prize money.
