PS6 Release Date Still Hasn't Been Decided

It's been just under six years since the PlayStation 5 released, which means there are now discussions floating around as to exactly when the next generation of consoles will be launching, whether we want them or not. With tech getting more expensive than ever, and the leap between consoles feeling more minimal, there hasn't been much appetite for a PlayStation 6. Despite that, many analysts believe that a PlayStation 6 is set to release at some point next year, what with Sony's decision to axe physical media starting in 2028. However, it seems Sony doesn't share the same mindset, as it's been revealed in a new interview by the Wall Street Journal (thanks VGC) that Sony still hasn't set an internal release date for the console. PS6 Still Doesn't Have An Internal Release Date This info came from Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, who coincidentally said back in May that Sony still hadn't picked a release date. In this new interview, Totoki once again reaffirms that the PS6 doesn't yet have an internal release date, and suggests that it may have something to do with the industry's current shortage of components that is driving up prices." "Considering that importance, we need to take some action," says Totoki. "Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape." It's a pretty dramatic statement, and one which has a slightly more serious ring to it than when Totoki last mentioned the PS6's release date, saying that the company would just "really observe and follow the situation." Now, it sounds like the gravity of the shortage has set in, and that Sony probably knows that a hugely expensive PS6 won't be appealing to many people. Despite that, PlayStation seems to be doing what it can to make the PS6 less and less appealing by the day. It's still maintaining its stance on going disclosed in 2028, despite massive fan backlash. A whopping 62 percent of countries won't be able to access the PlayStation Store, and we're looking at a $1,000 console at a minimum. It's not an appealing prospect, and the longer Sony waits to actually release the machine (hopefully when the components shortage isn't as bad), the better.
