Production designer Sabu Cyril wins Artist Namboothiri Samman Trust award

Sabu Cyril | Photo Credit: THULASI KAKKAT Noted production designer and art director Sabu Cyril has been selected for the second Artist Namboothiri Samman Trust award. Actor Mohanlal, patron of the trust who announced the award, said in a communication that Sabu Cyril had crafted his own style of art direction in Indian cinema. The award is in recognition of the immense contributions made by Mr. Cyril to cinema, he said.The award was instituted by the Kochi-based Artist Namboothiri Samman Trust in memory of the rich legacy of the legendary artist. It carries a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, citation and a sculpture of artist Namboothiri, according to the release.A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Mr. Cyril has worked as production designer and art director in over 115 feature films and over 2, 500 advertisements in multiple languages. He started his film career in 1988 and had designed several stage shows, including the 1996 Miss World contest.He has won four National and State awards each for art direction in a career spanning more than three decades. Some of his noted works include Baahubali I & II, RRR, Enthiran, Kaalapani, Iyer the Great, Amaram and Uncle Bun, it said. Published - September 29, 2026 05:46 pm IST
