Prime Video's Reacher Is Officially Changing Forever In 1 Week

Prime Video's Reacher might be excelling already, but the action thriller is set to change completely in just one week’s time. Even though Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings prequel, The Rings of Power, is one of the most expensive TV shows ever made, the streaming service has more than one series that can match the colossal fantasy show when it comes to cultural impact. The preponderance of popular R-rated superhero shows like Spider-Noir, Daredevil: Reborn, and Invincible alone proves that Prime Video’s The Boys was massive cultural touchstone in the early 2020s. Similarly, the very existence of shows like Tracker, Cross, and Prime Video’s CSI replacement Scarpetta prove that edgy, R-rated action thrillers based on long-running bestseller series are another popular format. Much like The Boys can be held responsible for a big part of the mature superhero show boom, one Prime Video hit’s success accounts for many of these hits being green lit. Debuting in 2022, Reacher became a colossal success despite the show’s humble origins. Author Lee Child’s book series was adapted to the screen once before, in a pair of theatrical movies from the 2010s starring Tom Cruise, but these outings failed to stun critics and divided the fan base of the novels. In contrast, from its debut outing through to 2026’s Reacher season 4, Prime Video’s action thriller series has been a huge hit with viewers and reviewers alike. This makes its upcoming spinoff, Neagley, a risky proposition. Reacher centers on Alan Ritchson’s hulking soldier of fortune, a military veteran who travels the US using his unique blend of brains, brawn, and espionage skills to take down corrupt cops, drug traffickers, the mafia, and terrorists alike. It’s not hard to discern Reacher’s appeal, and the show has been dubbed a masterpiece of so-called “Dad TV” thanks to its almost unstoppable, muscle-bound antihero, its plentiful action, and its twisty plotting. However, the upcoming spinoff Neagley highlights the reality that Reacher’s success isn’t as easily quantified as critics might like to think. With the arrival of this spinoff series, Reacher will become its own "shared universe” franchise as Neagley tells a new, original story in the same world as the original show. Starring Maria Sten as the title character, Neagley will focus on Reacher’s acquaintance investigating the suspicious death of an old friend. That setup sounds a lot like a season of Reacher, and, on the face of it, it seems like Prime Video are repeating their successful Bosch franchise formula by expanding on the original show with a female-led spinoff that retains most of its setup. The big difference is that Neagley isn’t based on a Child novel, whereas Reacher seasons 1-4 faithfully adapted books from the bestselling series. Reacher’s First Spinoff Could Not Be Arriving At A Better Time The fact that Reacher, Cross, and Scarpetta have not yet been able to equal the blend of critical acclaim and mainstream ratings success that Reacher enjoys proves that the show’s formula isn’t as easy to replicate as it may seem. As such, Neagley may have a hard time living up to the hype around the franchise, especially when Reacher season 4’s reviews have been almost universally superb. That said, the show’s timing couldn’t be better. As noted above, Reacher season 4 is currently enjoying immense critical popularity as reviewers praise the show for venturing into more mature, darker territory with this adaptation of Child’s paranoid 2009 thriller Gone Tomorrow. Since season 4 has gone down so well so far, Neagley is arriving at a time when Reacher fans have plenty of goodwill toward the franchise, so the new show could reasonably hope to feel like a natural extension of its popular predecessor.
