Prime Video's New Shared Universe Is Already 10/10

While Prime Video has a lot of great standalone action thriller shows, the streaming service’s new shared universe is one of the best on TV. A shared universe is an ingenious way for TV creators to tell new, original stories while also building on a reliable intellectual property that viewers already know and love. After AMC’s Interview with the Vampire proved a huge success with audiences and critics alike, its creators were able to expand on the Anne Rice adaptation’s Gothic vision with Mayfair Witches and Talamasca: The Secret Order. Of course, not all TV universes are so perfectly constructed. The sprawling Yellowstone franchise has many fans, but while its prequels, 1883 and 1923, were generally well received, its sequel series, Marshals, received criticism for essentially copy-and-pasting a conventional police procedural formula into the world of Yellowstone. Generally, shared universes that feel more like opportunistic cash-ins than organic extensions of their predecessors tend to earn this familiar criticism. That’s part of what makes Prime Video’s Reacher so notable. Based on author Lee Child’s bestselling book series of the same name, the Alan Ritchson vehicle stars Blue Mountain State’s breakout star as the eponymous military veteran who roams from one US city to another. Wherever Reacher goes, trouble tends to follow, and seasons 1—3 of the Prime Video thriller have seen him battle corrupt cops in Margrave, private defense contractors in Boston, and career criminals in Maine. Now, the upcoming spinoff Neagley will expand the character’s fictional world. Reacher’s Three-Season Success Bodes Well For Its Spinoff Neagley With over 30 titles to its name, Child’s Reacher novel series was a success long before Prime Video’s shared Reacher universe was launched with the original show’s debut in 2022. However, it would still have been tough for commentators to predict just how popular the series would become in the years that followed. All three seasons of Reacher were well received by critics, and all three broke viewing records for the streaming service. As such, there's no reason to think 2026’s upcoming season 4 and the upcoming spinoff Neagley will disappoint. Neagley is set to follow Maria Sten’s titular veteran Frances Neagley, a close associate of Reacher, as she investigates the suspicious death of a friend. With no source novel from Child, the series marks the first departure from the original books in the Reacher series, but the critical acclaim heaped on the original show’s first three outings proves the shared universe is ready to take this risk. Not only that, but the popularity of Sten’s character bodes even better for Neagley in season 1. Reacher Season 4’s Source Material Sets Up A Perfectly Timed Original Series Change Via MovieStillsDB Meanwhile, although The Terminal List’s upcoming return means Prime Video has another popular R-rated action thriller franchise to rival Reacher, the fourth season of the original show is making one clever change that bodes well for its future. Based on the 2009 novel Gone Tomorrow, Reacher season 4 starts with Reacher witnessing a woman taking her own life in the New York subway system before the plot plunges the show’s hero into a murky world of political conspiracies, terrorism, and cover-ups. If that all sounds surprisingly dark, grim, and paranoid, that’s because it is. Gone Tomorrow has a markedly more mature tone than many of Child’s Reacher novels, and season 4 will be accordingly darker in terms of style and tone. Infused with an unsettling, anxious tone that borrows from genre classics like The Parallax View, Three Days of the Condor, and the Bourne movies, Gone Tomorrow is exactly the right book to introduce a new level of depth and intensity to Reacher just as Neagley expands Prime Video’s flagship action thriller universe.
