Prime Video's 8-Part Action Comedy That Drew 927,000 Views In 2 Days Deserves A Season 2

Courtesy of Julie Vrabelova/Prime Published Sep 23, 2026, 6:30 PM EDT Laura Hurley has been writing about the entertainment industry for more than twelve years, after a decade as a content producer and editor at CinemaBlend after writing for WhatCulture and Examiner. Attending events like SCAD TVfest and San Diego Comic-Con over the course of her career, she has been immersed in the world of network, streaming, and cable TV. Summer tends to be a great time for streaming services to debut action-packed TV shows, and Prime Video delivered some of the best adventure-filled offerings of 2026. While the biggest network TV shows were on their summer hiatuses, the streamer premiered Nicolas Cage's Spider-Noir, rewarded Critical Role fans with The Legend of Vox Machina season 4, and brought Alan Ritchson back for another inventive season of Reacher. One other show managed to combine action with comedy in a way that's worthy of a much longer run than just one season, and its cancellation might not have to be the end. Ride or Die combines the talents of Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddingham and Truth Be Told's Octavia Spencer, both of whom stepped out of their usual molds for the combination of action and comedy. On the surface, Judith (Waddingham) and Debbie (Spencer) seem like ordinary best friends who share everything from book group to laughs at their friends' bad haircuts. There's much more than meets the eye, however. After 20 years of friendship, Debbie discovers that Judith is actually an elite assassin, and they have to go on the run before she can process the news. The reception to Ride or Die was so positive that a renewal for season 2 seemed all but guaranteed. In addition to the star power that Waddingham and Spencer brought (and some excellent chemistry as best friends), the show's first season received a nearly perfect score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, in the wake of Ride or Die getting cancelled, Paramount Television Studios is shopping it around to other platforms. The adventures could continue — if the stars align and a new home is found for Judith and Debbie. Ride Or Die Did Enough To Earn A Second Season (Just Not On Prime Video) While viewership data for streaming services can be hard to come by, Ride or Die did so well that it ranked on Luminate’s weekly US rankings almost immediately (via Deadline). It was viewed 927,000 times over the span of just two days, which was twice as many times as Elle and nearly four times as many as Off Campus over the same span of time. Elle and Off Campus are set to return for season 2, marking Prime Video's continued investment in targeting a younger audience than the demographic that checked out Ride or Die. The main demographic for Ride or Die was reportedly middle-aged women who already subscribed to Amazon Prime for shopping, meaning that Prime Video wasn't getting any new subscribers out of them. Still, Ride or Die was on Prime Video's top 10 chart for nine weeks over the summer, and even held onto the #1 spot for a time after it premiered. Considering that the streaming service released all eight episodes on the same day, Ride or Die only staying at #1 for a limited amount of time doesn't reflect badly, while staying in the top 10 for more than two months was a sign that plenty of people were checking the show out weeks after it launched. Even if the audience wasn't what Prime Video was looking for in order to continue investing in new seasons, Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer's series was successful by most metrics. Spencer's reaction to the cancellation suggests she wholeheartedly enjoyed making the show, and the chemistry between the two leads could definitely sustain more seasons. The adventure from the first season wasn't even entirely over by the time the final credits rolled, although the ending at least wasn't as painful a cliffhanger as it could have been. Plus, just because Ride or Die deserves to be one of Prime Video's best series of 2026 doesn't mean it can't work on another platform. A different streaming service might be the strongest option for Ride or Die to get a second life. Waddingham has certainly been successful on Apple TV, both as part of the Ted Lasso cast and the host of her own holiday special. Spencer has had a strong run on Apple TV as well, although Truth Be Told wasn't exactly a comedy along the lines of Ride or Die. Ride Or Die Season 2 Is Set To Be Even Stronger Than Season 1 Courtesy of Dušan Martinček/Prime A lot of the humor from Ride or Die's first season came from Debbie learning about Judith's double life, which involved everything from engaging in some spycraft herself to jumping off of a train. That shock factor was mostly resolved by the end of the first season, meaning that a second season could have portrayed Debbie as much more comfortable with Judith's world than the first time around. That's not to say that Debbie would ever become a spy on par with Judith, but the finale ended with the two friends embarking on a new stage in their relationship. The premise guarantees that the action would continue, unless the creative team veered in a wildly different direction for season 2, while Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer's performances suggest that they could continue to deliver plenty of laughs. Plus, Ride or Die was a great showcase for Spencer as a comedic actress. The Academy Award winner has certainly appeared in TV comedies over the years, such as Young Sheldon, black-ish, and Mom, but the majority of her main roles over the past decade have been dramatic. The Prime Video show proved how much fun she is as a co-lead in a comedy. Waddingham has, of course, been part of one of the most successful streaming comedies over the past decade thanks to Ted Lasso. Every factor seemed to point towards Ride or Die building on its successful first season to get even stronger (and funnier) in season 2, until Prime Video cancelled it. If the stars align while Paramount TV shops it around, Ride or Die can continue into that second season on a different platform. For now, all eight episodes are still available to stream on Prime Video.
