Prime Video’s 140 Minute Fantasy Epic Nets 1.1 Billion Minutes Viewed In 7 Days After Box Office Flop

Prime Video’s latest fantasy offering performed exceptionally well during its first seven days on the platform after flopping at the box office. On June 5, Masters of the Universe opened in theaters, arriving nearly 20 years after the cinematic reboot of the Mattel franchise was first put into development. However, the new He-Man movie failed to impress commercially, making only $114 million worldwide, while the budget was reportedly around $170 million. Masters of the Universe was subsequently added to Prime Video on July 22, and word has come in about how big of a streaming it was that first week. Puck co-founder Matthew Belloni shared on X that Masters of the Universe collected 1.173 billion minutes on the Nielsen Top 10 Streaming chart the week of July 20 to 26. It ranked in first place, while The Big Bang Theory occupied second place with 1.122 billion minutes viewed on HBO Max, and Netflix’s The Hawk taking third place with 944 million minutes viewed. Other entries on the chart include Ride or Die (Prime Video), House of the Dragon (HBO Max), Bluey (Disney+), 72 Hours (Netflix), SpongeBob SquarePants (Paramount+), Ransom Canyon (Netflix), and Grey’s Anatomy (Hulu/Netflix). Currently, Prime Video is the only official place where Masters of the Universe can be viewed from home. The movie will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray on October 20, and it hasn’t been announced yet when it will become available to purchase or rent from digital sources. The 1987 Masters of the Universe movie can currently be viewed for free on platforms like YouTube, Pluto TV, and Tubi. The Masters of the Universe reboot stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam of Eternia. As a 10-year-old boy, Adam’s homeworld was attacked by Skeletor and his army, and he was forced to flee to Earth with the Sword of Power. However, he lost the mighty weapon upon arriving on the planet his mother, Charlotte Riley’s Queen Marlena, came from, and it takes him 15 years to track it down. From there, Galitzine’s Adam is brought back to Eternia by his childhood friend Teela, played by Camila Mendes, so he can finally fulfill his heroic destiny as He-Man. Masters of the Universe’s cast also includes Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-At-Arms, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, James Purefoy as King Randor, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress, and Kristen Wiig as Roboto. Bumblebee’s Travis Knight directed the feature, and Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and David Callaham all worked on the script. ScreenRant’s Masters of the Universe review was among the more positive perspectives, with reviewer Molly Freeman giving it eight out of 10 stars.
