Published Oct 17, 2026, 1:00 PM EDT Zach Moser has been writing for ScreenRant since 2022, covering movies, classic TV, and streaming TV. His areas of expertise cover a wide range of genres with a particular interest in horror and drama, and the conversations around the TV and film industry. When he's not covering the latest film releases or chronicling the latest season of a new show, he's writing humor pieces for McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Slackjaw, and Points In Case or working on short stories and his second novel. Prime Video cancelled Jensen Ackles' hit action series in 2025, and a year later, Ackles has offered some insight into why that decision was made. Post-Supernatural, Ackles has had an enviable career. Long-lived network shows are often the peak of their stars' careers, but Ackles seems like he's just getting started. A guest role in The Boys led to him starring in his own spinoff, Vought Rising, and he has plenty more on his plate, including a recurring role in Tracker. In 2025, he starred in Prime Video's Countdown, a 2025 crime drama following detective Mark Meachum (Ackles) of the LAPD. When a Department of Homeland Security officer is killed in broad daylight, Detective Meachum, a former U.S. Army Ranger, is brought in to investigate. As part of a covert task force, Meachum works with undercover agents to figure out who the murderer is. While he's investigating, Meachum uncovers a larger conspiracy that threatens millions of people. Countdown ran for one season and 13 episodes, but was cancelled just a few weeks after the season finale. At the time, there wasn't much if= information, though the 35% on Rotten Tomatoes probably didn't help things. In 2026, Ackles commented on the show, and his explanation for why the series got cancelled adds a new twist to the story. Prime Video Cancelling Countdown Looks Even Stranger Now On October 11, 2026, at SPNVan, Ackles came on stage for a panel, and during the conversation, Ackles discussed his filmography and the business of television (via YouTube). He talked about how shows need to be white-hot out of the gates; otherwise, it's more than likely going to be cancelled. To illustrate this point, he brought up Countdown, saying, "Countdown, I think it was like top three. It was top three on the platform for all 10 weeks and it didn't get renewed for season 2. You know, there could have been a list of reasons why, but I believe one of them was because the head of the studio left and a new guy came in, and all four like them going, 'Okay well now we want to do our things.' And the show hadn't really had time to really solidify itself, so collateral damage." Countdown was a popular show on Prime Video, and that wasn't enough to keep it on the air. When Prime Video got new leadership, the new people wanted to put their stamp on the streamer. As a result, Countdown was taken off the air, giving the new leaders a chance to start again. If Countdown was cancelled specifically because of its reception, that would make more sense than the real reason, if Ackles' suggestion is the complete story, of course. Cancelling a show solely because the new heads of the studio want their administration to be different tells you all you need to know about the modern business landscape. Countdown Ending Already Felt Odd Due To Ackles' New Show Countdown ending was strange for a lot of reasons, but it's gotten even weirder with the reveal of Ackles' next project. Rules of Prey is an upcoming Amazon MGM Studios series based on John Sanford's book of the same name. The eight-episode series began filming in September 2026. Ackles stars as Lucas Davenport, a former Minneapolis Police detective who is brought out of retirement to help solve a string of disturbing murders. These murders seem to be sending a message straight to Davenport, and he's roped into a twisted conspiracy that will force him to make drastic choices. Rules of Prey sounds quite a bit like Countdown, as if the new heads of Amazon Studios liked Countdown but couldn't abide a show they didn't approve of, so found another show with a similar premise. It feels a little bit wasteful, and while good news for the people behind Rules of Prey, the ones behind Countdown are probably feeling a bit stung.
