We continue our race around the country through all 50 states when it comes to our favorite read before anything ever happens on the gridiron: Preseason rankings. Next up in the marathon of states when it comes to high school football preseason rankings is Maine, the Pine Tree State. Stepping right to the top as usual is the Thornton Academy Golden Trojans. Here’s how Massey ranked the best Maine high school football teams in the Pine Tree State before the season begins. The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. 1. Thornton Academy Golden Trojans Top-ranked Thornton Academy finished as the No. 1 team in the state from last season after winning Maine's highest classification, Class A, with a resounding 28-0 win over Portland, avenging the previous year’s loss to the Bulldogs in the championship. The victory in the state final also marked the 200th career victory for Thornton Academy head coach Kevin Kezal, who returns this fall to lead another very talented Golden Trojans group. The Golden Trojans have to replace the production out of the backfield from graduated Mauricio Sunderland, who was the team's leading rusher last season. 2. Bonny Eagle Scots The Bonny Eagle Scots last season had themselves a chance to return to the Class A state championship game for the first time since 2019 when they won it all, but ended up coming short in a 40-28 loss to Thornton Academy in the postseason. Nonetheless, the Scots had a strong 2025 campaign after finishing below .500 in 2024 and were arguably the comeback team of the year out of Maine. That has throughly backed up with the seven straight victories, which included wins over Windham, Noble, Oxford Hills Comprehensive and most notably Portland down the stretch before the initial first loss to the eventual Class A state champions, Thornton Academy. 3. Portland Bulldogs Portland heads into another season of change as Nick Cliche stepped away as head coach of the Bulldogs. Taking his place is first-year head coach Dylan Rottkov, who served as associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Falmouth the last couple of years. The Bulldogs will have to replace the production of arguably one of the top high school football players in the state in Maine enrollee Cordell Jones, who accounted for 2,232 all-purpose yards and 29 total touchdowns last season. 4. South Portland Red Riots It was a even 2025 campaign for South Portland last year as they went 5-5 on the season, but will have to reload if they want to remain among the state's best. Quarterback Parker Reny graduated, leaving a void behind center as the Red Riots averaged around 21 points per game on offense last fall. All of South Portland's losses from last year came against teams within the Top 5 of these preseason Maine high school football rankings. 5. Noble Knights Noble has been consistent over the last three seasons, averaging around seven wins and last year the final two losses came up against top-ranked Thornton Academy and No. 2 Bonny Eagle, respectively. Now the Knights head into another season where they could see another winning campaign as they're slated to return 2027 quarterback Mark Lapointe, who completed 66 of 107 passes for nearly 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns.
