Aston Villa look the obvious contenders to gatecrash the established order. They’ve finished in the top four twice in the last three seasons under Emery and won the Europa League last term. He’s also recruited well, with Joao Gomes, Alejandro Garnacho and blockbuster talent Johan Manzambi all through the door. If the new arrivals settle quickly, another top-four push looks realistic. Tottenham It’s amazing what a flurry of summer signings will do. Fresh from flirting with relegation and finishing 17th, the bookies have Spurs as the sixth-most likely side to finish in the top four. It’s not hard to see why. Tottenham have strengthened considerably, with Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke arriving for a combined £228million, while free signings Marcos Senesi and Andrew Robertson look shrewd. Now Roberto De Zerbi is at the helm, having previously led Brighton to a sixth-placed finish, there’s genuine belief Spurs can kick on. But going from 17th to fourth is a huge ask – especially without any new attacking additions. Newcastle It’s difficult to see the argument for Newcastle challenging the upper echelons of the Premier League this season. Eddie Howe has left after last season’s miserable 12th-placed finish, along with Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali. New boss Matthias Jaissle has a huge job on his hands, having never managed in the Premier League. His task has been made even harder by Newcastle’s change in transfer strategy, with four of their five new arrivals aged 20 or younger. Brighton This may ruffle a few feathers, but I’m just not having Brighton as serious top-four contenders. I’m not disputing that they’re the definition of a well-run club punching above their weight – but sixth looks the absolute pinnacle in my book. The Seagulls have finished eighth in each of the last two campaigns and were a full 12 points off fourth last season. They’ve since lost Danny Welbeck, their top goalscorer in each of those seasons, and defensive stalwart Jan Paul van Hecke. They’ve spent over £100m on six new additions, but the bulk of that has gone on teenagers more likely to flourish over time than make an immediate top-four impact. Bournemouth Andoni Iraola may have left the building, but Marco Rose is by no means a significant downgrade and plays a similarly intense, attacking style. Continuity in the managerial department therefore looks good, as does the fact the Cherries have retained the majority of the squad that came within three points of pipping Liverpool to fifth.
