The franchise that spent decades constantly reinventing itself has no new TV shows on the way after Disney+ scrapped its long-awaited reboot. It’s especially worrying because Cosmic Fury, the most recent Power Rangers show, finished in 2023. Three years later, the small-screen future of the Rangers looks more uncertain than it has in decades. There’s no way to sugarcoat the current state of Power Rangers, but 2026 has at least delivered one live-action release officially tied to the brand. Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz isn’t a Power Rangers show in the conventional sense, but it is still an official one. The project was produced with Hasbro’s partner for new Power Rangers toys, Playmates, to support the Re-Ignition line of action figures and merchandise, making this licensed YouTube series the closest thing fans currently have to a new show. However, explaining its connections to the brand undersells how ambitious Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz is. The series revisits the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers world with the Ninja Kidz cast, but rather than recreating familiar moster-of-the-week battles, it builds an alternate continuity where Lord Zedd has conquered Earth and the scattered Rangers must fight back alongside some familiar faces from later eras. For curious fans willing to give it a chance, it’s surprisingly gripping and, most importantly, fun. What’s more, every episode can be watched free on YouTube. The Ninja Kidz Power Rangers YouTube Series Perfectly Honors Mighty Morphin’s Legacy There’s two reasons Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz is far better than a licensed fan series intended to sell merchandise has any right being. Firstly, it gets why MMPR worked. The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers succeeded because it combined colorful costumes, giant robots, and larger-than-life villains, with awesome martial arts and a sense of adventure. Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz replicates the formula perfectly. The recast Jason, Kimberly, Trini, Billy, and Zack capture the spirit of the cast behind the original team, while the action-heavy tone of Ninja Kidz content is naturally suited to Ranger battles. The project also looks unmistakably like Power Rangers despite the characters and effects getting a visual upgrade. Its redesigned Ranger suits preserve the colors, helmets, and dinosaur imagery of the Mighty Morphin era, while adding armor detail that gives the team a more modern appearance. Classic villains like Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd, and Goldar return, with their updated appearances feeling less like a redesign and more like a fine-tuning for the modern era. The result feels nostalgic but not to the extent it’s simply trying to recreate the original show. This distinction from the aesthetic of original Mighty Morphin run ties in to the other reason the new Power Rangers series works so well: Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz changes the mythology to tell its own story. Zedd actually wins, forcing some Rangers to flee to Rafkon, where they encounter a younger reinvention of Power Rangers Dino Fury hero Zayto. Meanwhile, Tommy Oliver operates not as the Green Ranger, but as the mysterious Dragon, a lone hero resisting Zedd's regime back on Earth. The reworking of the classic MMPR story gives Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz an identity beyond nostalgia. Even Bulk is reinvented as a surprisingly capable ally rather than simply comic relief. It is unmistakably inspired by Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but it treats the franchise's lore as something to be reshaped rather than merely imitated. Power Rangers X Ninja Kidz Is Currently The Franchise’s Only Live-Action Show As impressive as Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz is, its existence also highlights the strange state the franchise is currently in. Disney+ spent roughly a year and a half developing a new live-action Power Rangers series from Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz before the project was shelved. That leaves Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz in the extraordinary position of being 2026's only new live-action Power Rangers series. A YouTube project connected to a toy campaign is unlikely to be the grand comeback many fans imagined after Cosmic Fury. Yet, with no replacement for the Disney+ reboot currently announced, it’s effectively become the live-action side of the franchise. In that context, the team at Ninja Kidz deserve credit for aiming considerably higher than required. The YouTube series could easily have been little more than a collection of short promotional battles designed to put new toys onscreen. Instead, Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz establishes its own continuity, carries plot threads between installments, reinvents familiar characters, and even draws upon mythology created decades after Mighty Morphin. That doesn’t mean Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz is a satisfactory substitute for a fully-fledged TV revival as far as most fans are concerned. It does, however, make it an unexpectedly substantial project during an incredibly loud quiet period. With the main franchise's live-action future uncertain, having a free YouTube series that genuinely tries to tell an ambitious Power Rangers story is worth appreciating.
