Power plants destroyed in Nepal floods? This Video is from Pakistan

Amid the devastating flash floods and landslides in Nepal, a video of a power plant getting damaged by floodwater has gone viral. An X user shared the video and wrote, “Nepal Floods: Around 13 hydropower projects have reportedly been affected by severe flooding, with most located along rivers in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. Around 60 workers at the Langtang Hydropower Project are reportedly missing.”News outlets like NDTV, Dainik Bhaskar, and Divya Bhaskar shared the video, claiming it was from Nepal.India Today Fact Check found that while hydropower projects in Nepal have been affected by the floods, this 2022 video is from Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. OUR PROBEReverse-searching frames from the video led us to a report by Pakistan’s The Friday Times dated February 16, 2023, which featured a screenshot of the video. It identified the photo as the Ranolia Power Plant. According to the report, people were still struggling with the devastation caused by the 2022 floods in the Lower Kohistan region of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.Subsequently, we found this video had been uploaded on several YouTube channels in August 2022. According to these channels, the video showed damage caused to the Ranolia Hydro Power Plant by floods. We also found a June 2022 vlog about the Ranolia Hydro Power Plant. A comparison between this and the viral video makes it clear that the clip was indeed from Pakistan.We also found the viral video in a report by the German news outlet Stern dated September 2, 2022. According to the outlet, the video showed floods in Pakistan’s Duber River. Stern credited the video to the TikTok account "anwrworld".We also found an Instagram account with the same username. This Pakistan-based account describes itself as a nature enthusiast in its bio. The account shared the video on August 28, 2022, describing it as the flood in the Duber.After the video went viral, the account shared it again on August 27, 2026, and clarified that it was shot during the August 2022 floods in the small village of Duber in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.India Today Fact Check also spoke to the account’s owner, Anwar.
