Power outage disrupts services at Thrissur Medical College

Power supply to the Thrissur Government Medical College has been disrupted since around 10 p.m. on Thursday, forcing the authorities to put on hold scheduled surgeries and several other medical procedures. The disruption was caused by a fault in the feeder at the substation supplying power to the medical college. Efforts are under way to rectify the fault and restore normal power supply.In view of the prolonged outage, the authorities have directed that scheduled surgeries, among other procedures, be suspended. The medical college normally conducts around 20 to 24 surgeries a day, all of which have been put on hold amid the power crisis.Though the medical college has generator backup, it is only sufficient to provide power to wards and other essential areas. The backup system cannot fully support the requirements of the operating theatres and other critical facilities, officials said. Doctors and other hospital staff described the situation as an unusual and serious disruption at the medical college.The power supply had not been resumed even by Friday night.
